If Karachi’s ethnic groups got along it could be a city like New York

sadly this is Pakistan's story everywhere, if ____ had been ______ or these people would have got along with these people, ______ would have been a different story. Pakistan seems to have become a country with only potential but yet delivers nowhere.

he does conveniently forget that a lot of American weapons went through Karachi in the 80s and even today to some extent.

Karachi always has been multi-ethnic for a very long time.

I dont think there is ethnic tension for the sake of it; the political parties are the ones to blame by pulling ethnic card just to win votes.....

Stephen Cohen's an old fart now. He should consider retiring and taking up a different interest.

We in Khi definitely don't wish for gangsters! We have them aplenty already, running petty crime gangs like cellphone snatching on every street corner.

Out of all the stuffs you dig up only this words. Lame:tdown:
Obviously gangs don't get themselves involved with petty
activities of such. Nor my points were to emphasize such
activities.

Well there was this long trip in Singapore I made few years back
due to medical reasons, its a wonderful city no doubt but it lacked soul.
Too much regulations, mundane people, systematic lifestyles
no gangsters it was so boring.

Cant disagree with this...One of the most boring cities in the world...Why in the name of god does everybody there follow rules so strictly..Totally plastic city..

Ethno-linguistic is the more applicable term but to foreigners, the friction can be best described as Ethnic divisions within this part of the world.

Yara Mr. Cohen himself used the term ethnolinguistic, so no problems for foreigners in understanding our internal dynamics.

What unsettles me a little bit in your over-simplification of ethnolinguistic to ethnic is myself: my tribe or ethnicity is spread over a large part of the world and they are considered indigenous in every single one of those parts, but within Pakistan many people, in their understanding of no-man-without-caste, classify me into a linguistic group. You miss me out when you talk of ethnicity and include me when you talk of ethno-linguistic-classification. That's all.

The other bits I either agree with or am ignorant about. This alone needed commenting.

Agree again with your second part.

You forgot to mention India? :O As most of the Karachites can trace their roots back to India. :)

Tracing roots, and owning up to them is different.. most Karachites.. are well.. karachites. more and more.. whether your roots are in India or Peshawar..
Karachi has a way of detaching you from them, and making you part of itself.

Karachi had been neglected all years in the past, it was just in 2000's when MQM came into power, they start all the development work & all mega plans for Karachi were prepared by them, as the party has no power now we are watching alot of troubles occuring in Karachi nowadays & the current ruling party don't seems to care about this once charming city. All is politics.

Karachi was always a major trade centre like bombay. These 2 cities were the gateway to the western world( from an Indian's POV ) before independence. Our PM said mumbai will be a shanghai within 20 yrs. I will guarantee you mumbai will not become shanghai. But I feel confident that Gurgaon or Noida can reach shanghai level.

Comparisons are useless. It should only be taken to raise the bar for improvement of a city. Karachi was already big and still big. Only Pakistan has to make it better, not make it a NY.

Pardon me if my post has gone offtopic...I have not explained the problems faced by Karachi or Bombay, because i know what problems, bombay is facing but not Karachi. I feel Karachi is similar to bombay.

Karachi was a mid level city under the British Raj which was developed in the late 18th and early 19th century, it cannot be compared to Bombay or Calcutta. Most of the development occurred after the creation of Pakistan when a lot of migrants moved to this city and it rapidly expanded as well as developed to become the city it is today.

This comparison is for the sake of giving an idea of its potential, not to turn it into New York.

It has a lot of potential but the issues that are faced by this nations hinders its progress.

I think that's not correct. Those cities had that 'soul' before they became rundown or crime-ridden. The former comes from history and the latter from over-population and mismanagement. Europe's iconic cities have souls and unique cultures despite being not too dilapidated!

Cheers.

In my opinion all ethnics can get along but they need some good leaders, our current leaders actually use these ethnic differences to their advantage for votes.
