Iconic ‘Afghan Girl’ To Come To India For Medical Treatment

Afghan woman Sharbat Gula, the iconic face of refugee struggle who was deported from Pakistan a few days ago, will travel to India soon for medical treatment.

Gula became a worldwide face after her photograph appeared in the National Geographic Magazine in 1984. She was deported from Pakistan to Afghanistan on Wednesday on charges of falsifying identity papers.

In her 40s now, she has been offered treatment free-of-cost by the government for which Afghan Ambassador Shaida Abdali expressed gratitude to India.

“The iconic Afghan Sharbat Gula will soon be in India for medical treatment free of cost–Thank you India for being a true friend!,” Afghan ambassador Shaida Abdali tweeted.

Gula, popularly known as the ‘Afghan girl’, is reportedly suffering from Hepatitis C besides having some other health issues. After fleeing Afghanistan as a young child, Gula spent decades in Pakistan and was arrested recently on charges of possessing fake identity documents.

Gula, a mother of three, is said to undergo treatment at Bengaluru hospital. Gula’s image, with striking green eyes, photographed by award winning photographer Steve McCurry had made her the face of refugee crisis in Afghanistan. Pakistan has been criticised for deporting Gula.

I am fine with her coming to India for medical treatment
free of cost ??

I already predicted that :)))))))))))))))))))))

In fact when Afghan Government forced her to refuse stay in Pakistan after we have traced her fake ID, it was already conveyed to us that she will be used against Pakistan through her interviews to Indian media :)

Exactly.

Why feed these ungrateful people from Islamic countries?

OMG such a hue n cry over her free of cost treatment.Treating a poor girl from Afghanistan that will boost India's image internationally is such a pain for you guys? You don't have problem giving asylum to Baluchistan people, or spending millions on Kasab, giving millions in aid to BD and Afg, but this?

Seriously, India/Indians can become rich but mindset will remain third world.

I would say the same if she was 'grateful hindu'... govt of India should take care of Indian people first... not against foreign aid as such, but dont like this special favours to individuals.

.
cant afgan govt pay for it? we got enough poor people to take care of already...

It is a pre-planned visit . Ghani and his company had already laid foundation for this plan against Pakistan.

She has simple Hepatitis B which is curable rather Hepatitis C is also curable and Is she has Hepatitis C she only need medicine like Sovaldi (Sofosbuvir) in combination with an another tablet all this is a 6 month treatment for Chronic C which costs about three lakh Pakistani rupees. She does not need to visit another country for that.

In fact She was offered this treatment in Pakistan. BTW Hepatitis B does not need this treatment can be cured with other medicines.

Pakistan should have handled her case smartly. It was not a good move to jail her. Though it was illegal what she did, she could have been simply deported with full dignity. Not to forget she is a poor widow who wouldn't have acquired fake papers out of choice. I am sure she will get asylum in some developed country soon enough. India is not a right place for her, comments of many here clearly reflect that.

.
they pay for their own treatment...

Obviously, they have to pay for their treatment. Sharbat's free treatment is more of PR exercise.India already doing lot of subsidized/free services to Afghans.

.
I knew it within that she'd be going into the hands of our neighbors soon...... Lo and behold!
She's there!

.
i am not against her coming to India.. am against Indian govt paying the bill.. are we fighting who will get her as patient, and scared that we will lose to iran? lolz
yeah,,,i know,,,its such a big issue,,,how can GOI pay for the treatment of a well known poor women,,,GOI shud have insisted tht afghan govt pay the expenses,,sure :)
they pay for their own treatment...
except tht,,they dont always have to,,,,,if they go for a govt. hospital

Sorry Bro, humbly disagree with your point.
Pakistan needs to work lot on PR related issues with Afghanistan. You could have tackled the ID related issue calmly, infact your media created lot of uproar on this trivial thing. Lets not blame every thing on your neighbors.

OUR MEDIA IN FACT supported her :) anyway I agree our government blown it. I won't be surprised if Nawaz Sharif govt did it deliberately.
