CHANDIGARH (PTI): The IAF would start a project next month for upgradation of MiG 29 fighter aircraft, Air Marshal Pramod Vasant Athawale has said.

"The project to upgrade MIG 29 will be completed in the next five years," he told reporters Tuesday.

The IAF had received six upgraded MIG 29 aircraft from Russia and the rest of the fleet will be upgraded in the country itself, he said.

Besides, the IAF had decided to upgrade the repair and service facilities of fighter aircraft, he said.

The upgradation project of MIG 29 would be done at the Base Repair depot (BRD) at Kanpur, he said.

The IAF had already started upgradation of AN 32 aircraft, he said.

He said that the maintenance force of IAF is targeting to achieve five per cent progress from the existing level in role equipment as well as aircraft serviceability.

"The IAF is observing this year as year of maintenance of aircraft," he said.

Under the modernisation process, all BRDs are going through revamp, he said.

I would agree but the 'bump' increases our fuel capacity and enhances the range of our jets. I mean, even the F-16s look sad with the CFTs, but these upgrades are for better utilization of the machine during a war; not for looks. It is a bitter fact when we have to deal with Russian jets; they just are too good at making jets with looks to die for.

Don't they already have their hands overloaded with a dozen other projects? With their current capacity of production, I don't think this should be given to HAL at all. Let them focus on getting the current job done: getting the Tejas production rate at 30 jets a year minimum. Let UAC do this upgrading.

Bad idea man. Knowing what sarkari agencies are capable of especially in terms of speed and efficiency of work, I would rather prefer UAC doing what they are already masters at, than HAL which is already burdened with aerospace projects in a country that is supposed to be booming in aerospace and aviation sector right now. They're busy to the breaking point right now, since the GOI won't allow privates to enter (by transferring some tech capabilities to them for a start).

HAL needs some gap. They really need to take one thing at a time so that they can concentrate better. Just hurtling projects after projects on their heads will only make them perform worse. I normally always welcome indigenization of tech, but knowing HAL's capabilities, I don't think they should handle too much.

Existing Mig facilities might be the ones free for upgrade works.

They are only equipped for maintenance. Asking these facilities to upgrade the MiG-29 to UPG standard (it looks as if they are remaking the entire aircraft body from the pics), would be a little too much. Let UAC do the job. They created the Fulcrum and they can do it the best. Let's focus on our local projects first.
