NEW DELHI: With an eye on the future and fed up with the "bureaucratic culture" pervading Hindustan Aeronautics Ltd (HAL), the country's only aircraft manufacturer, IAF now wants the control of the navratna defence PSU.

IAF has asked the defence ministry (MoD) to appoint one of its three-star officers, instead of a bureaucrat, as the chairman and managing director of HAL once the present incumbent Ashok Nayak retires on October 31.

MoD sources confirmed IAF had even proposed the name of present assistant chief of air staff (operations & space), Air Vice Marshal M Matheswaran, a top-notch fighter pilot now approved for the air marshal rank, for the HAL post.

what do you guys think- personally in the US no govt owned defense firms to have these issues.

.
^^ I think bringing DRDO under forces will be a great move at least it will reduce the bureaucratic red tapism of lazy babus.

The answer to that is quite simple; just list the chairman of HAL over the last fifteen appointments.

I would prefer HAL to be in its present form, not headed by a uniform wala. Agreed that bureaucratic process (read: red tape) can be a downer sometimes. But i am not entirely convinced that the turnover times, or other project metrics are going to improve by an IAF guy taking over. On the contrary, i think it will result in more cover ups for unfinished projects. In the present format, at least there seems to be a system of checks and balances to some extent.

i would like see IAF person for a change ... though not much can b done changing one person ,but it ll bring more things to light . may better bureacrat nexttime..

@jay try to ignore even they reply u . .

I think direct control will not change much . . Iaf involvement is necessary but control must in hand of the person who have good experience of management . . Delay and other problems are not just because HAL. . . DRDO labs are developing many systems but we unable to put our major systems like radar and engine . . . There procurement and intrigation also a time talking process . . Iaf better to ask more R&D money and work in DRDO they can also cooperate with technical institutes and improve Research field . . . Because once our own system will be ready there will be advantage of time taken by procurement process and many more

You system seems too corrupted.

...

IAF's revolutionary proposal, on the face of it, makes a lot of sense. As HAL's biggest customer, it has every reason to be worried that most projects being handled by the PSU, which has a sales turnover of over Rs 13,000 crore, have been plagued by time and cost overruns.

...

Looks like nobody cares about your national interest but his own bank account.

The question is: will be military personnel cleaner, given your air carrier story with Russia?

We'll see.
