IAF gives Black Cat Commandos wings to fly to crisis situations

In a recent decision, India's top security managers have decided to keep on one-hour readiness one newly-acquired C-130J Hercules plane each for the four NSG facilities at Mumbai, Chennai, Kolkata and Hyderabad, reports RS Chauhan.

India's elite anti-hijacking and anti-terror force, the National Security Guard, also known as Black Cats, now have dedicated, fast and big transport planes available to them to zip around the country in any emergency.

In a recent decision, India's top security managers have decided to keep on one-hour readiness one newly-acquired C-130J Hercules plane each for the four NSG facilities at Mumbai, Chennai, Kolkata and Hyderabad.

Although the Aviation Research Centre or ARC under the Research and Analysis Wing is supposed to ferry the NSG troopers for any anti-hijacking or anti-terror missions in their IL-76 planes, the Air Force has offered to place the C-130Js on stand-by since the state of the art tactical airlift planes are much better equipped for such missions.

India bought six C-130Js from the United States in 2010. All of them are based at the Hindon Air Station just outside Delhi [ Images ]. Six more are to be acquired over the next two years. The US Marine Corps utilises these aircraft for its expeditionary operations.

NSG trooper have carried out practice runs on the Hercules over the past six months, familiarising themselves with the working of the super-efficient aircraft.

The Air Force has also decided to train men of the Garud force -- its own commando force -- on the C-130Js to develop synergy.

The primary task for the Hercules, however, remains transportation and employment with the Army's Parachute Regiment under which India's largest Special Forces operate.

Over the next two years, Indian Air Force will also induct the the C-17 strategic airlift airplanes.

The four-engine C-17 aircraft can lift two T-90 tanks and artillery guns and are used for rapid strategic airlift of troops and cargo to operating bases throughout the world. It can also perform tactical airlift, medical evacuation and airdrop missions. The aircraft has the capacity to carry over 130 fully-equipped combat ready troops.

The Indian Air Force, still waiting for finalisation of the big contract to purchase 126 Medium Multi-Role Combat Aircraft is, however, doing well in quickly inducting tactical and strategic airlift capable transport aircraft which will fulfill a variety of roles -- from transporting NSG troops to ferrying relief material in natural calamities and from ferrying personnel of the National Disaster Response Force to air drop special forces in a conflict situation.

IAF should buy 4 new C130 separately for NSG there is not need to divide the limited resources.

This should have been done long ago anyways better late than never

Do they have to take permission from IAF to fly these ? A lot of time will be wasted.. :(

Well thats why the V-22 may be a preferred choice for these kinds of operations. The SOF having a V 22 will be a great addition to immediately insert troops fast.

So what now ,the NSG are gonna PAra drop into action?

seems Excessive ,but then again...nothings excessive when it comes to national security.

They don't necessarily need to para-drop, the C-130s can land like any other aircraft, and then the troopers can disembark, just like from any other aircraft. And thats what they will be doing.

good decision......but i think 1 c-130j is not enough

it is better India buy the C130 separately for the NSG well that one hour readiness is still very big

No...India already ordered C-17s

Well Hal MRTA is also on line.

One hour is long but in case of sudden emergency Transport helicopters can help a little.

i don't know how C-130j will be helpful as NSG commando was distributed into 4 parts in India and i think helos are better in this kind of situation as densely crowded city isn't ideal place for para dropping.

why c-130j? AN-32s or IL-76s would have been enough! NSGs need aircrafts just for transportation, right? Why give such a sophisticatd bird for them?

This was planned before 26/11, but that incident just showed once more how important a credible fleet of tactical aircrafts is, even if we cosider only the use inside of India, simply by the fact that India is a huge country. One reason I was against the C17 decision without a real competition, because not the lack of capabilities of the IL 76 were the issue at that night, but the lack of aircrafts available and with the high costs, C17 comes in similar numbers as IL 76 only. For operations inside of India, the C130Js and the fact GoI set up NSG locations in any major city now will be more than enough. But whenever any of our commando forces will have to go outside of India, or needs to carry heavier equipment like vehicles for example, the C130J will be too small and IAF's only answer will be such a big aircraft like the C17 again. But nobody will send out an C17 to penetrate enemy airspace right?
That's the problem when you have a fleet of aircrafts dedicated for either tactical or strategic roles and why most modern air forces today consider aircrafts with both capabilities inbetween or as replacements. Sadly IAF didn't went that way.

Btw, these C130Js will be operated by IAF and IAF pilots will fly them of course, but if needed they will be given under NSG command, similar to the Mi 35s so far, which were under IAs command.

The CV22 would be a great addition for the commando forces, because it adds special capabilities that other aircrafts don't offer and that's one reasons why I hope IAF don't goes for Chinooks and gets Mi 26 for the heavy transport + CV 22 for tactical requirements.

Because it has several advantages for the transportation of commando forces:

- specialised avionics
- night flying capabilities
- mid air refuelling
- short take off and landing (not possible with IL 76)
- capable of carrying smaller vehicles (not possible with AN 32)

NSG is not a special force that is supposed to undertake operation against any external threats in a war like scenario.NSG is mainly for counter hijack or counter terrorist operations like 26/11. Due to the very reason, specialised avionics
- night flying capabilities

aren't exactly needed by NSG.These are needed by the Paras,Garuds and MARCOS more than the NSG. Had we had the C-130js in plenty, like we are having the An-32s now,we could have given them to NSG.But now we are having them in very small nos,so give them first to those who really need them first.

Besides,IAF An-32s and IL-76s have night flying capability.

^^^

right..NSG is anti terrorist squad, not SF that they have to go to behind enemy lines.heavy helos like Mi-17 or Dhruv is enough for them.
