No it is through their surnames, certain surnames mean lower cast.
Cast system is a curse on Indian society which not just effects Hindus but also effects other religions also.
Our constitution bans cast discrimination as well as religious discrimination but it is still practised in our society. For example not many marry outside their own cast.
As of today the ancient and obsolete cast system is slowely but surely being eradicated as it does not conform to modern human values such as equality and pluralism.

And worse thing people are regularly reminded of their caste when filling forms, taking admissions, etc. This has made caste system even more ingrained in our society. Its needs to be forget, not constantly brought up in articles and TV shows. Otherwise no matter how modern the country becomes, it will remain there. Caste cancer is a great tool to hold India back, and people since 70 years are expecting things to change themselves.
