Hungary actively spying on Ukraine, admits Budapest official

UNIAN: Agents of the Hungarian intelligence have been actively operating in Kyiv in relation to the Russian-Ukrainian conflict, says Janos Lazar, Hungary's Minister responsible for civil intelligence.

According to Lazar's June 23 testimony to the Hungarian parliament on reorganization of civilian intelligence gathering agency, Hungarian spies have been active in Kyiv, just like the spies of other Hungary's regional neighbors, to ensure that political leaders are able to promote the country's interests, The Budapest Beacon reports.

He cited the Russian-Ukrainian conflict as a primary example of radical changes to security in the region over the past year. Hungary shares borders with a country engaged in an armed conflict.

Lazar also stated that the government and the Information Office are convinced that the future of Hungarians living in the Transcarpathia (southwestern Ukrainian region of Zakarpatia) will be a serious issue in the coming decade, and that the Information Office is carrying out operations to protect Hungarian citizens in the Carpathian Basin.

These operations are the first in twenty-five years in which the Hungarian government is openly undertaking activities in Ukraine in total opposition to the wishes of the Ukrainian government. Ukraine's foreign ministry is doing what it can to stop Hungary's spies and Hungarian diplomats from undertaking operations in Ukraine, Lazar said.

Ukraine neighbors looking to recover their old territories if Ukraine collapses. Ruthenia region of Ukraine has minority Hungarian population but majority of population is Ukrainian. When Georgia was near collapse after Russian invasion its neighbors also showed interest it ins regions. Turkey may show interest in Ajaria, Armenian may want Javekhetia and Azerbaijan may want Kvemo Kartli region.

Adjar has 90% ethnic Georgian and 70% Christian population, why it will want to go with Turkey??

Ajaria has higher number of Ajarian Muslims that identify with Turkey than the Hungarians in Ruthenia region of Ukraine. Many Ajarians were forced to give up their ethnic identity during the USSR era and forced to declare themselves as Georgians.

The collapse of the Soviet Union and the re-establishment of Georgian independence accelerated the Christianization of Adjarians, especially among the young. However a significant number of Ajarians, particularly in and around Khulo remain Sunni Muslims. According to estimates recently published by the Department of Statistics of Adjara, 63% are Georgian Orthodox Christians, and 30% Muslim.

From the same page,

"The Adjarians (Georgian: აჭარლები, Ačarlebi) are an ethnographic group of Georgians", meaning: a sub-group of Georgian ethnicity. Also, "Many Adjarians were converted to Islam by the Ottoman Empire in the 16th and 17th centuries when the Ottomans occupied southwestern Georgian lands" and even their language is a local dialect of the Georgian language. So, they are Georgian by origin/ethnicity and not Turkish.

So question remains that they are Georgian by ethnicity and 2/3 are Christian by religion, why they want to go with Turkey?

Ajaria was Muslim majority province but Russia wanted the port of Batumi and forced Turkey to cede Ajaria to Russia. Muslim Ajarians are ethnically Ajarians and most were bilingual speaking Turkish and Ajarian languages. Large number of Muslim Ajarians migrated and settled in Turkey after the Russian invasion and occupation. So now they are only 30% of the population and before they were the majority. The current President of Turkey Recep Tayyip Erdoğan is also Turkified Ajarian.

Erdoğan was born in the Kasımpaşa neighborhood of Istanbul to which his family, of Georgian origin, had moved from Rize Province.

That can be true, but how now Adjarians could accept their annexation with Turkey??

The same way Kashmir is annexed by India, Hungary wants to annex Ruthenia and Romania wants to annex Moldova.

Your example is wrong, you can say "The same way Pakistan annexed some part of Kashmir i.e. by aggression". But in case of Kashmiri accession to India, Jammu & Kashmir acceded to India through article of accession signed by ruler of J&K and I don't think that could be the case of Adjaria.

Hungary unveils controversial migrant fence - watch on - uatoday.tv

German Chancellor Angela Merkel says fence makes 'no sense'

Hungary will finish building a 175 kilometre-long fence along its border with Serbia by November 30, Hungarian Defence Minister, Csaba Hende announced on Thursday (July 16) as he visited the construction site.

Hungarian soldiers are currently building different types of fences along the border to test the best technology, Hende added.

"The soldiers of the Hungarian Army are building this sample fence with four different technologies, we will choose one or two from these which will be erected along the whole 175 kilometre border. The deadline for the work is November 30, 2015," he said at the site.

Hungary started building the fence on Monday (July 13) along its border with Serbia to try to stop illegal migrants entering from the south, a barrier which German Chancellor Angela Merkel has said makes "no sense."

Tens of thousands of migrants, mainly from the Middle East and Africa, use the Balkans route to get into the European Union, passing from Greece to Macedonia and Serbia and then to the EU's visa-free Schengen zone that starts in Hungary. Serbia, a non-EU member protested the move by Hungary, fearing it will be left to cope with thousands of stranded migrants after the fence is built.

"We are building a temporary border fence which we can dismantle any time. And we are doing this because we are at the moment unable to respond differently to the 81,333 illegal border crossings," Hungarian Interior Minister Sandor Pinter said.

Hungary has registered more than 80,000 migrants so far this year, compared with 43,000 in the whole of last year.

Most migrants travel on to wealthier parts of the EU, but Hungary's government has said those states might send illegal migrants back to Hungary. It blocked just such a move last month, provoking tensions with Vienna.

Although the EU's rules allow countries to send migrants back to their first point of entry into the bloc, there is no evidence of a large scale of such returns to Hungary yet.

Shelters in Hungary and Austria are overcrowded and late last month Hungarian police used tear gas to subdue hundreds of migrants fighting each other and throwing rocks in a camp in the eastern city Debrecen.

The United Nations and the Council of Europe have criticized changes to Hungary's asylum laws, saying they would harm asylum-seekers' right to seek safety there and put them at risk.
