What's new

Huge reserves of hydrocarbons located in Makran, says PN chief (DAWN)

If this oil has been discovered, it is still useless unless the oil is used develop the country.
meaning, we drill for it, refine and and sell it ourselves.
What's the point if all the profits go to America and Europe?

Now you are talking about the obtainability of the reserves, which is a different subject. Proving that reserves exist is done entirely by probing using a number of methods. Nobody randomly drills 5km into the ground to prove the existence of reserves.

That is why exxonExxon is asking for 25% ... Do you know how many wildcats hit dry or >90% watercuts? Over 80% in unexplored regions. Out of the 20% that do encounter hydrocarbons only a small percentage hit significant "pools". Oil&Gas exploration is a very risky endeavour.

The risk is very high for E&P companies and to obtain financial capital from investment firms is very hard for these companies.

I have never heard of the term "probing for reserves". Reserves are not exploratory plays.

There is no such thing as "obtainabity of reserves". Reserves are only established once you have drilled your well and established reserves.
Geological surveys only speak about probability of finding hydrocarbons.... Not about reserves estimation.

1. Volumeteic reserves are established once you have an understanding of the porosity, saturations, and net pay maps.

2. Material balance reserves are established with fluid properties and the different drive mechanism.

3. Production reserves are based on production data of at least 6 months beyond the initial high GOR production to get decline analysis.

You combine 1,2 and 3 to get a good number on Reserves.

Does that mean that reserves that are "unobtainable" the same as if they do not exist, from a financial standpoint?

If there are economically recoverable reservesn, modern drilling and completion technology has advanced to a point that we can extract even the most challenging of reserves (e.g. horizontal wells etc.).

I just want us to stop saying "reserves". There are no established reserves yet. Pakistani politicians are making a fool of the public. There is only prospects right now... And some very good ones.

Notice how ExxonMobil is mum on the whole Pakistan Indus basin issue?... Because they know they will be held accountable by their shareholders and the industry if they start responding back to this whole reserves talk that is currently making waves in Pakistan media right now.

I am not saying that Pakistan is not going to hit a significant find... I'm just saying let's not start the celebrations yet... Or we will all end up looking like the water car Pakistani engineering fools.

may be exon is fooling us to earn money with wrong claims.we should wait until real extraction starts

Market valuation and stock of Exxon Mobil has been falling since last week of July. Just checked its stock fell 0.56% today.

Granted I am not familiar with geology jargon and my use of the word "reserves" was copied from the media/news usage of the word, but why are you so upset about this? Are you an Exxon shareholder? Or being pedantic for the sake of keeping the forum accurate?

Sorry if my responses offended you.

The whole conversation around Pakistan's oil and gas potential on this forum and in the media is misleading. My posts are not directed towards ExxonMobil. It's directed at these threads on PDF and the general Pakistani social media hype over this issue.

I was just bringing clarity to an issue from my humble point of view.
