According to Jilin TV, Huawei has taken a big move and bravely moved forward under the US chip ban, and started research in another field, namely photonic chips. The performance of this chip is better than existing chips, and does not require lithography machines produced by European and American companies. The Dutch media commented on this that the US lithography machine blockade is meaningless, and China may not need these equipment to produce high-end chips in the future. At the same time, the Russian media also attached great importance to this move by Huawei. They said that the United States underestimated the strength and determination of Chinese companies, and the blockade would only arouse challenges from Chinese companies.

Blocking the lithography machine is meaningless
For some time now, the White House has formulated a series of sanctions against Chinese semiconductor companies and communication technology companies. European and American companies are not allowed to sell goods or technologies to companies on the blacklist, including the Dutch ASML company. Manufacturing lithography machine. Huawei is one of the victims of these policies. The company's business relies heavily on high-end chips produced in Europe and the United States, but the United States does not allow companies that own these chips to do business with Huawei.

In order to break through this limitation, Huawei launched a big move and began to develop photonic chips. People who don't know about chips may have never heard of such chips. In fact, there are many different sub-fields in the semiconductor industry. The familiar chips basically belong to the field of integrated circuits, while the photonic chip belongs to the field of optoelectronics. The latter is not well-known, but the performance of the chip is far better than ordinary integrated circuits.

The advantage of the photonic chip is in the transmission performance, which can greatly improve the working efficiency of electronic equipment. Now the research on integrated circuits has gradually come to an end and is subject to physical boundaries. When the chip reaches the 2nm field, it is almost impossible to make a smaller chip. , Even if it succeeds, there is no guarantee that its performance will be greatly improved. On the whole, photonic chips are the future of the semiconductor industry.

The most important thing is that research in this field has just started, and European and American countries have not yet formed a monopoly. If China takes the lead in breaking through the application of photonic chips, it can reverse its current disadvantages. In addition, this chip manufacturing process is completely different from the past. It does not require a lithography machine at all, and will use brand-new manufacturing technology. The Dutch media have discovered the most critical point. They claim that the US lithography machine blockade will soon lose its effect. In the future, we may not need these lithography machines at all.

The Russian media did the same The conclusion that with the continuous iteration of technology, the formal significance of US sanctions will be greater than the actual effect. The reason is that the United States has underestimated the R&D capabilities of Chinese companies. The United States wanted to take this opportunity to completely eliminate the possibility of China's entry into the high-end semiconductor market. Unexpectedly, it inspires the courage of Chinese companies to overcome technical difficulties. At the moment, Huawei has taken the right step, pointing to the most cutting-edge chip technology research.

We have another magic weapon

In addition to the layout of photonic chip research, Chinese companies have also prepared another magic weapon, namely carbon-based chips, more accurately graphene chips. Once this chip is successfully developed, it will completely overturn the development trajectory of previous chips. After more than ten years of intensive work in this field, the scientists of the Chinese Academy of Sciences have achieved beautiful results. The first batch of graphene wafers have been offline and the finished products have been displayed to the public, demonstrating China's scientific research level.

This achievement has been recognized by people at home and abroad. China is not the only country studying graphene chips in the world, but there are not many countries that can produce qualified wafers. The introduction of these wafers means that China has ran ahead of many countries on this track and is expected to achieve technological surpassing in this field. All in all, the current chip predicament is not terrible. China is well prepared for the future by deploying photonic chips and graphene chips.
Americans can counter this by bullying and blacklisting companies and customers that use the new Chinese chipset. if the claims are to be believed then Americans will panic and do everything to prevent China from achieving any milestone

Nice fantasy ..the reality is lots of Chinese institutions are milking the Government out of billions with false claims. Wuhan Hongxin Semiconductor Manufacturing Co is one of the first to go down after burning through 20 billion dollars in state funds. Many more to follow.... Tacoma Semiconductor Technology..Dehuai ...Dekema (Nanjing)....
so the money HAL the creators of mighty tejas are burned as no success yet! crazy turd indians invest on rnd other burn money! lols

Well, where the guy will get a photonics foundry from?

Photonics is also easily a 100% photo-litho process. Saying this as somebody who once did few things for a co making those SFP transceivers.

The co went to design a cheap 100G optics with MZI single wavelength duplex at around 2015-2016, but unfortunately been run by a completely unsubstantial man, a darling of those VC investors, a typical silicon valley wunder kinder. He cracked under pressure, and ran away with money upon first difficulties.
There is no such thing as photonics wafer. How would it look like? It only exists in movie. Wafer is cut by laser beam. Chip or structure on it is built by light or photography or lithography. Saying such chips are photo chips is nonsense.
I read Huawei is entering pig business. That is in contrast a good move.

It is,

First how will it look like? Probably HEM III-V material over silicon, as silicon will make a bad laser diodes, its bandgap is in medium to far IR, unsuitable for optical wavelengths, and a simply fact that you need higher frequencies to get advantage of bandwidth optical signal provides.

Second, it would probably be not cut. The whole point of photonics is than you build multiple devices on as single die, instead integrating different functional parts mechanically. Only the whole integrated device will be sawed off a wafer by a mechanical saw, without any lasers.

Still, it's essentially the same as any other IC manufacturing, except with a bit different materials.

The Chinese have been trying to assimilate western barbarian technology from the time of the Qing Dynasty. Even when it became abundantly clear that replicating the technology was the easy part. The not so easy part of naturing a creative society still eludes China.
China succeeded in doing that. It now has an innovation ecosystem that rivals the US and it’s just getting started.

I still don’t understand. The article says: the advantage of the photonic chip is in the transmission performance.
what transmission?
The speed of electrons in wire is almost equal to the speed of light. It’s lower however at such low distance we talk about 2nm the difference is negligible. And the physics as we know it: there is nothing faster than speed of light. will Huawei invent something that can be faster than speed of light?
Laser is light isn’t it?
Higher frequency, higher bandwidth transmit more information, that is not new.

No it hasn’t, China hasn’t created a product of note in modern history.

China is very good at taking others ideas and products and making evolutionary improvements, but can’t develop revolutionary products or industries.

China is a fast follower and doesn’t have the creativity to compete.

quantum entanglement behaviour is faster than light speed.

'turd Indians' burning money on Tejas has nothing to do with this topic.

yes it has the ecosystem but not the foundation

China is a fast follower and doesn’t have the creativity to compete.

Perfect examples are Tesla/FSD and the EV industry, and SpaceX and the space industry. China is now a follower in both industries.

EVs and autonomous driving are the smartphones/apps of the 2020s. EVs are a multi trillion dollar industry and FSD will unlock trillions of dollars in the economy just like apps did.

China is now playing catch up........again.

China has just recently industrialized. It will be making groundbreaking innovation in the near future. No doubt about that.

There’s significant doubt. Look at Western Europe these days. Their mature economies, with high standards of living and yet how much innovation is coming from there? Not a whole lot.

China definitely has money, but it takes a lot more than money to innovate and create revolutionary products. Your seeing it unfolding now at Tesla with their vehicles and FSD and at SpaceX with Starship.

Optical switches are incomparably more power efficient, though quite impractical outside of long range transmission, yes.

Right now, logic performance has become limited by the amount of power the chip can dissipate. Pack any amount of transistors on the die you want, but you cannot go much higher than 100W/cm² invariably of the frequency.

If you can make a practical optical switch to replace CMOS devices, you can smash this thermal limit big time. You can even have less switches in total, but have them working on some ludicrously high frequency which would've made any semiconductor device to melt itself.

We have 3 trillion of hard earned dollars...using it for industrial ventures and infrastructure is better than gambling it on wallstreet. No idea what happened to han bao bao, but you can just keep on dismissing us, over and over again we were supposed to collapse, fail and explode. Just keep counting on it, we will just keep on marching and marching and marching. I have seen how my motherland grew powerful in 20 years. You should visit China one day and understand how India is a shithole.

Let me tell you the story about the first Chinese dsp which was faked, the guy was jailed and punished, but did we give up? No we continued and if we listened to naysayers like you that trying to work hard towards tech independenve is useless, we wouldn't be a threat to US today, there won't be the whole ecosystem of chips designed by us today. Now it's not about whether we can design chips, it's about we can make the most advanced chips. One thing you should have learnt by now is never underestimate China, the reason we became number 2 today is because we were always dismissed as inferior. Lolol

Nobody can stop the rejuvenation of the Great Chinese Nation, all these pitiful attempts by the yankee hooligans can only slightly delay the inevitable.
