Three 50 tonne bollard pull tugs being built by Hindustan Shipyard Limited (HSL) for the Indian Navy were successfully floated out from the covered building dock on Friday.

The tugs will be delivered to the Navy by the year-end. The whole floating and undocking evolution requiring highly precise coordination and control was executed with customary élan and professionalism at a simple ceremony here.

The tugs are being built to meet IRS classification using in-house design. The tugs are 34.55 meters in length, 11.25m in breadth and draught of 4.5m. They are powered by two Wartsila diesel engines with Voith Schneider propulsion system with a speed of 12 knots.

A HSL release said on Saturday that all-out efforts were underway to complete balance works and deliver two tugs by September and third one by December, 2013 to meet the requirement of INS Vikramaditya, which is scheduled to be commissioned later this year. The function was attended by the Chairman, officers, classification societies, the representatives from Hindustan Shipyard Labour & Staff Union, officers associations and SC and ST Welfare Association.
