How to detect and neutralize a suiciden bomber

^^^ impressive, indeed my knowledge is limited, but i managed to brought some smiles;)

.
I hear on geo a few hours ago, that they were odering new machines to detect explosives in vehicles for Lahore.

In my humble opinion to first detect and then to neutralize a suicide bomber we need a form of SNIFFER TECHNOLOGY. This technology works on the principal of using fine spray on the suspect and then collecting that spray through various sensors to detect any type of explosives vapors. This scanner also detects explosives vapors even if the suspect has been around them for a while (not necessarily carrying them at the time). Again made by a US based company, this detector is currently being used in a compartmentalized/ portal mode for use at airports etc. A little imagination and the same tech could be applied for outdoor use. The US company and its link is as follows;

Already being used by Islamabad Police as well as FIA, Pakistan is currenty using quite a lot of devices and systems including the SYS-2 Explosive Test Kits sys-2.com.

But none of these offer "REMOTE" detection capability, especially the option to detect a mobile threat outisde the effective kill zone of a (Body Borne IED). These devices are perfect for luggage etc, but not for humans.

The U-Hunter is truly unique as it offers the ability to detect a mobile target well outside the lethal kill zone of a (BBIED) allowing the controllers/operators to neturalise the threat as necessary.

Suicide bombings have become a bane to our existence in Pakistan as peaceful citizens. Day in and out we run into some misguided bloke armed with either an RDX laden steel ball stuffed vest or explosives laden two or four wheels blowing himself and innocents up at various locations in the world, including Pakistan. Surely technology may have an answers to deter such attacks before they happen. One of the promising technology in this regards is the millimeter wave scanner (Automated Explosvies Detectors, TSA-Certified EDS, Advanced Technology - L3 Communications) radars that can detect under-clothing items that may be harmful Already such advanced radars have been installed by the rich Arab Governments on all of their sensitive installations. These mm-wave radars/ scanners are made by a US company. Already however, such technology using mm-wave is employed in shape of scanners installed at airports and in Iraq at sensitive enter points by the US Army.

What can we do in Pakistan to come up with an out-of-the-box tech solution in order to detect and deter an intent suicide bomber? Any suggestions?

A very interesting topic,a whole nation 's becoming rich and powerful is the only way that contributes to the country's stable though detecting technology is very important too. poverty and political confilics will do great damage to the country's work enverioment and people's life, our country need to focus on the econonics at once!

The FIA and the Bomb Squad with Islamabad Police is equipped with hand held limited capacity sniffers which are normally used AFTER the explosion for forensics and not before for early warning. They also use color coded chemical kits to determine the type of explosives used.

Again, portable detectors that you have mentioned are either passive or used for forensics AFTER the explosion has taken place.

The U-Hunter is truly unique as it offers the ability to detect a mobile target well outside the lethal kill zone of a (BBIED) allowing the controllers/operators to neturalise the threat as necessary.

What is a U-HUNTER? Can you please post a link or systems description?

An excellent mm-wave stand-off radar system that is being currently deployed by the US Army in Iraq, IDF in Israel and some Arab palaces is the following made by SAGO SYSTEMS of USA. This is by far the most effective piece of technology I have seen so far that can be helpful in early warning and detection of s suicide bomber in a crowd.

Another company called SET Corporation offers the same technology.

Agreed! but how would you know who to shoot in the first place? :what:. How can you tell the bomber from the innocents? :what: Keeping aside the political and emotional aspect of it, my question above is more tilted towards finding a technological solution.

no innocent is going to pose as a suicide bomber! keep the thinking simple and get results!:enjoy:

300 people walking about in a busy market. One of them is a suicide bomber wearing explosive vests. How can you tell out of the 300 people who he or she is without the help of technology?

C'mon fatman17, how many innocent people will you shoot before or even IF getting to the actual bomber without the help of technology?

ok seriously, no amount of technology can save the 300 if there is a suicide bomber (SB) amidst them.

nip the perp in the bud - dismantle the militant madrassas and the organisations which preach this type of behaviour and hatred. if the SB is already within the general population, there is no fool proof system to stop them - not in 3rd world countries anyway.

in our case, no half-measures will do, we have to take serious action to rid of this menace!

OK. you got the jist of starting the post in the first para above but swayed into the political and emotional solution-ism in the second one!! Actually technology can help. See my posts above with the relevant links to some interesting gadgets. Not perfect but its indeed a start and I would believe that within the next 2-3 years we will see a man-portable hand-held radar that would actually detect the nut-case in a crowd of 300!!

hope u r right but 2-3 years down the line is too late for us! we are already at the "tipping point" in relation to terrorism. political and emotional solution-ism will be required. you are talking about "preventive" and i am advocating "curative" measures and they go hand-in-hand!:enjoy:

Do we not already have explosives 'sniffing' equipment, albeit not portable?

Given that suicide bombers are carrying explosives largely open to the air in their vests, I have to imagine that they give off enough traces to be detected by large scanners at entry points to say large bazaars and installations, and possibly even, as you said, by portable scanners at some point.

But fatman too is correct that in the long run 'prevention' is better than cure, and we have to act against the sources of this terror to marginalize it.

The smell perimeter or proximity of the explosives vapor of all types is limited in periphery. Normally for this reason, sniffing dogs are used at hotel entrances to sniff into a vehicle nooks and cranny to pick the 'smell' of an explosive.

In the open the smell of vapor is diluted with other smells in the environment thereby making the detection impossible for a sniffer technology or even a trained dogs (unless the mutt is lucky enough to be within 2 feet of the bomber wearing the vest). The sniffer technology can only be used in a controlled environment such as the portals above do.

In the open and in a crowd, you could only detect the said bomber through a millimeter wave technology that has the capacity to penetrate clothes but not the skin. This mm-wave is perfectly safe and has very negligible electromagnetic exposure compared to the same wave types that you are exposed to through using your mobile phones.

Lastly & as I have already mentioned above, Pakistani LEA's are equipped with portable hand-held sniffers that are only effective at a very short range and mostly for explosives hidden in crevasses and holes etc. They are mostly passive and not active detectors like mm-wave radars are.

Hope that clears up the tech puzzle for you! :enjoy:

And since this forum bars 'world issues' therefore we should concentrate on finding tech solutions here!
