Read Shashi Throor's book "India From Midnight to the Millennium" many years ago, in it he came across as an apologist for the Hindutva extremists and tried to justify their pogroms which he termed as backlash of supposed Muslim subjugation of Hindus for over a millennia.

At that time, I thought if a supposed left leaning educated urbane liberal is an apologist for the Hindu extremist, it doesn't bode well for the future of India and events subsequent to that have proven my inclination to be correct.

Their threats, abuse, discrimination, persecution, boycott, wrongful accusations, and lynchings are meant to keep Hindus, particularly low caste Hindus, from leaving the fold. It's a message, "this will happen to you if you change religion". It is in policy such as losing government benefits if they change religion to Islam. If it was really a backlash from 'invasions' how would you explain the mistreatment of the Muslims of tiny Lakshwadeep islands. You can't. If there was a backlash, India's policy would reflect against 'invaders' such as Afghanistan, Uzbekistan, Iran, and Arabs. However, Hindutva are very friendly with them.
