64 children die at India hospital due to oxygen shortage

LUCKNOW, India - At least 64 children have died over six days at a government hospital in northern India that suffered oxygen shortages, officials said Saturday.

Authorities have launched an inquiry into the causes of the oxygen disruption but denied reports that it had caused the deaths at the Baba Raghav Das Hospital in Gorakhpur, Uttar Pradesh state.


Indian media said 30 children died on Thursday and Friday because of the lack of oxygen on wards. Suppliers' bills had allegedly not been paid.


"Sixty patients have died at the hospital in the last five days but we don't think it's linked to reports of oxygen shortage," Anil Kumar, Gorakhpur's divisional commissioner told AFP.

State health minister Sidharth Nath Singh announced later that four more deaths had been reported Saturday, taking the toll to 64 over the six days starting Monday.

Singh denied that any of the deaths were linked to the oxygen shortage.

Twenty-three children died on Thursday, when, according to a statement shared by the office of state chief minister, "the pressure of the liquid oxygen supply became low and 52 reserve oxygen cylinders were pressed into service".

The office of Prime Minister Narendra Modi said on Twitter that Modi was "monitoring the situation in Gorakhpur" and was in touch with state authorities. Modi's conservative nationalist party controls the state.

- 'All hell broke loose' - .

The Hindustan Times newspaper on Saturday described chaotic scenes at the hospital as oxygen supply was disrupted.

"Even as 90 jumbo oxygen cylinders were pressed into service to maintain the supply on Friday, the hospital ran out of oxygen around 1.00am," it said.

And this media publicity is the reason Indian govt. has to curtail and curb the med. visas to Pakistan...so what is supposedly done to promote med. tourism from Pakistan resulted in the opposite and the end of medical tourism from Pakistan.

Why and how?? with more media publicity in India mainstream(India today) and many more channels the hardliners, the Sanghis and Senas, the extremist VHP, the Shiv Sena, RSS constituency started protesting against the Pakistani patients visiting India(due to media publicity they got to know about it). If hospitals haven't publicized it, it would have been fine.

So with BJP in the center and RSS, VHP supporting the govt. India had no choice but to budge to the demand of hardliners as they are in the center, not just at the fringe...and this led to India curbing the Med. Visas...on strong public demand of Indian people(not all of them)....


The travails and the pitfalls of too much media hype and publicity....it backfired here.

...and check Pakistan sage and sagacious, humanitarian response on Afghan children treated for cancer in Pakistan, not a single media publicity report, cheap and obnoxious publicity you see in Indian media...no can stoop to lower levels than Indians.


....just to add SKMCH, the Lahore based charity cancer hospital has treated about 1600 Afghan children of cancer for free, the curing rate was high above 95% in children..and incurred more than a billion rupees on their treatment, not a single media house here published any report about it over the years...came to know about it through Afghan media just now. Not a single media bulletin from the hospital about this gesture.

...the point is it is about the self esteem and the prestige of the patient as well, they don't like to be projected as some commodities in full media glare, specially if that is a charity thing....need to be a hush hush affair.
