HMAS Canberra enters commission into Australian Navy at Sydney ceremony

Australia just said that they are considering buying the F-35B for the carriers.

Originally they didn't plan to use jets in it, but since the Spanish design is already set up for them, they decided to keep the option and I think they are quite happy now that they did that.

You know, this ship is just about between the Huga and the Izumo (That's the name of the new one, right?) in terms of size, the main difference is just the sky jump.

The flight deck in this carrier is 200 meters and I think that will be enough considering the sky jump.

The Camberra is 230 m long and the Izumo is 249 m, they are both amphibious, but the Izumo is not set up for jets, the sky jump would be the main difference in my opinion.

Both Izumo and Canberra Class were not designed with Fixed Wing Operation in mind, the reason the Canberra have skijump is, according to our DoD, is because it would cost more to redesign one WITHOUT skijump...

Both Canberra and Izumo flight deck are not heat treated and both do not have big enough aircraft hanger to accommodate F-35 operation, that being said, it could be added back in with upgrade package...

Lol

As far as I know all that F-35B needs for take off is a 210-220m runway on flight deck. But "JSF on deck" decisions were expected but unplanned for both Aussies and us for my perspective.

that's because of the stupid government, it save money, they said

Damn! That's one hell of a modification to do to accommodate the F-35 and on a new ship on top of everything.

Those people are indeed stupid, it was quite clear considering the developing threats in the region that Australia will have to operate F-35's on it.

Why such a small crew?

two words, automation and integration

compare the canberra and the preceded ship HMAS Kanimbla Class, you would see the later have twice the crew but half the size of a Canberra.

Traditionally ship in this category have a sepreate compartment of ships navigation and operation and the logistic/cargo management system

With the canberra, the bridge is integrated to do both so that eliminated a bunch of technician trying to communicate the bridge and the landing operation.

Another reason is most sensor operated on ship are autonomous. Hence less human input, only when a human decision is needed then it will require human intervention

thats the reason why this ship can be operational with only 500 crew

Then the Turkish LHD should/will have the same crew size?
