HMAS Canberra enters commission into Australian Navy at Sydney ceremony

Yes it is. :)

This is going to be an excellent addition to the Canberra Class. May I ask your opinion on what ships will compose of the Carrier Strike Group?

On that note, @jhungary , we should consider making an Australian Armed Forces News & Discussion Thread. ;)

Hobart class Destroyer with 4 Adelaide Class Frigate and COlin Class + Soryu Class Sub

I want to see this someday. Love to see RAN, JMSDF and USN in shoulder to shoulder exercises...

. . . . . .
Currently the HMAS Canberra would carry

  • MRH90 helicopter
  • CH-47 Chinook helicopter
  • Blackhawk helicopter
  • Armed Reconnaisance Helicopter
  • Romeo Seahawk
But PM of Australia have already asked the Department of Defence of Australia to include the F-35B on the 2015 or 2016 defence white paper, If it is so then Australian will operate 2 squadron of F-35B on each of the Canberra Class. But at the moment, they are Chopper Carrier only.

Well, I took some photo of her when she is berthed at Garden Island, I will post them later when I am not that busy.

Think the turkish one would allow fixed wing operation. If it is not because of the labor government in Australia, Canberra would also be build to launch Fix Wing Aircraft from the get go, instead of we must now acquiring upgrade package for it.

thank you, I think the Canberra is about the same sizes and same design than the JDS Izumo, right??

Yeah. The Levent-class is nealy the same with Canberra in specs. Just it's 2-3 meters shorter and does not have a ski-jump. But the capacity of the lift have been increased. It's known that Seahawks and CH-47F will be stationed. Navy has plans to induct 16x F-35B. I think that's why the JSF orders are 100+16.

Then, you are saying only the JC-I are build for F-35B, both the Levent Class and the Canberra Class wasn't.......

lol, why we bother to buy LHAs then lol....

As far as I know all that F-35B needs for take off is a 210-220m runway on flight deck. But "JSF on deck" decisions were expected but unplanned for both Aussies and us for my perspective.

which aircraft's does it carry?

Australia just said that they are considering buying the F-35B for the carriers.

Originally they didn't plan to use jets in it, but since the Spanish design is already set up for them, they decided to keep the option and I think they are quite happy now that they did that.

She's a beautiful ship! Congrats Australia!

You know, this ship is just about between the Huga and the Izumo (That's the name of the new one, right?) in terms of size, the main difference is just the sky jump.

Lol

The flight deck in this carrier is 200 meters and I think that will be enough considering the sky jump.

The Camberra is 230 m long and the Izumo is 249 m, they are both amphibious, but the Izumo is not set up for jets, the sky jump would be the main difference in my opinion.

Hmm. In Levent, it'll have 225-227 meters length. Differences with JC-I on flight deck are that there's no ski-jump and the elevator at stern side will be removed which gives F-35B enough runway length for STOVL.

The required runway length for F-35B is 210-220 meters.

Oh I see, that's quite a significant modification from the original design, do you have any drawings of it?
