13th of July, 2014 – a date that will be remembered for a long time to come for the heroics Indian national basketball team as they beat all the odds to claim a sensational win against China at the 5th FIBA Asia Cup.

Led by head coach Scott Flemming, the Indian managed to upset the World No.12 Chinese side 65-58 to register the country's biggest competitive victory in their 78-year basketball history.

China, also the host nation for this edition of the Asia Cup, were clear favourites at the start of the game. However, a determined effort from the Indian side forced the Chinese to concede 23 turnovers in the game.

The likes of Amjyot Singh, Pratham Singh with 13 points each, and captain Vishesh Bhriguvanshi, who another 12 points, were the stars of the show as they put every bit of effort going forward and holding the play at the back.

While the game looked set for a close finish at the end of the 3rd quarter with India ahead 50-48, it was the Chinese crop that couldn't handle the pressure in the last few minutes of the match. With some dubious turnovers and sloppy freethrows, the did make it easier for the Indian side to finish the game with a flourish.

Coach Flemming praise the Indian performance
Speaking to the Eklavyas, Indian coach Scott Flemming lauded the way his side approached the game. “I thought our defense was solid. We didn’t shoot well from three-point line and we didn’t shoot well from the free-throw line, but that shows we did the other things well.

"We made clutch plays when we needed them. The biggest things is that we competed in every possession,” he said.

Flemming added, “I’m so happy for these players. And I’m so happy for the country of India. I’ve coached for 32 years in the USA, and the only reason I came here – win or lose – was to make a difference in the lives of these players.

Final Score: India beat China 65-58(24-11, 9-20, 15-19, 17-8)

doesn't matter if they are B,C,D or Z......at end ...they are representative of china....

Yes at the end the win matters since it's Asia Cup but we're still nowhere near the level of China in basketball, they have a structured 3 tier league and excellent infra when compared to pathetic facilities and training our players get.

YOu are right. Chinese coaches/ scouts do not understand how to groom or draft players. Size is important but it is still there number one preference. They need to start grooming more players with natural talent, athleticism. When Mr. Nobody drafted 54th in the nba draft can become a superstar in your league, you got problems.

The system to scout talent, the fitness of the players, the knowledge of the game, the desire, the coaching, etc are all lacking in China.
Mens football and Mens basketball in China is in a sorry state.

Until there is a complete overhaul of the entire system, China will continue to get humiliated.

Sports are a joke in the whole of Asia, from Turkey to the Philippines and every country inbetween.

Actually this victory is a wake up call to both India and China.

We both have 1.3 and 1.6 billion people in our countries and we cannot find players to win football and basketball qualifications?

Surely the talent must be there. But then our societies, companies, governments etc, do nothing to promote it to the level of Olympics in your case or cricket in our case.

In India, it is even worse; cricketers are considered deities here and worshipped by fans. They are status-wise superior to even Bollywood stars and have a rabid fan following. All while football fans here have to cheer for Brazil or Argentina as our team never has enough backing to excel in the sport and make it to the world cup.

Hockey is another sport we are strong in. But only a niche hockey playing group loves it.

Similarly we have olympic champions who become medallists only by their merit but no government no companies no sponsorships for their skills.

We both need to improve.

Japan and Korea actually qualified for football.

Beyond the countries you said, if we look at pacific side, New Zealanders are masters in Rugby; their hakka war dance from Maori tradition being world famous. While Australia has an excellent all-round sports training infrastructure that lets players compete in every sports around the world. It has some of the best sporting facilities and training centres in the world.

And this is apart from the cricket these two play.

The problem in our country is every sport is politicized.

I was under impression China has very good basketball players.

Our sports facilities really need for money and better administrators who want sports to grow in India and want in India in to shine in sports on global level, not the ones who use their posts for their own selfish motives.

Congrats to India.

This is sports, winning and loosing happens. We should confine it to sports only.
