Hindus in Kashmir gain confidence of safety-burnt effigy of Ravana

Srinagar: October 22, 2007 – After 18 years, the Hindus in Kashmir valley felt that they were secure and so their religious rights, they observed their Dussehrra festival and burnt a huge effigy of a Ravana to mark their belief that good always wins over evil.The Dussehrra celebrations always fall late at the end of the nine-days.
There are about 10,000 Hindus in Kashmir Valley but due to regular activities of terrorism, they had stopped celebrating the Dussehra celebrations.
The Hindus always carried fear from the Islamist militants who targeted the community after the anti-India insurgency erupted in 1989.
Since the violence has considerably fallen, the fear is withered away, around 500 Hindus, known as Kashmiri Pandits, marched through the streets of Srinagar along with other Hindus and burned Ravana's effigy in a cricket stadium.
It was also reported that some Muslims also co-operated them in their celebrations. Some children from different communities were also seen with their parents. (IR Summary).
