HANOI (Reuters) - Vietnam formally accused China of violating its sovereignty and a recent confidence-building pact on Saturday by landing a plane on an airstrip Beijing has built in a contested part of the South China Sea.
Foreign Ministry spokesman Le Hai Binh said China had conducted a test-flight to the airfield, "built illegally on Fiery Cross Reef, which is part of Vietnam's Spratlys". It is a serious infringement of the sovereignty of Vietnam on the Spratly archipelago,

All of the other claimants in SCS has airstrip built in Spratly for decades already.

Only now that China has built airstrip and landed airplane for the first time.

China's test flight to Yongshu Jiao 'within sovereignty': FM
Xinhua 2016-01-03 07:40

A test flight to a newly-built airfield on a South China Sea reef was a matter "completely within China's sovereignty," a Foreign Ministry spokesperson said late Saturday evening.

Spokeswoman Hua Chunying said China has finished building an airfield on Yongshu Jiao of China's Nansha Islands.

The Chinese government used a civil aircraft to conduct the flight in order to test whether the airfield facilities meet civil aviation standards, she said, in response to reported objections of Vietnam's foreign ministry.

"China has indisputable sovereignty over the Nansha Islands and their adjacent waters. China will not accept the unfounded accusation from the Vietnamese side," Hua said.

At present, the relations between China and Vietnam maintain a momentum of development. China hopes Vietnam can work accordingly to achieve "sustainable, healthy and stable" development of bilateral ties, Hua said.

Does it matter? That's just a line on the map. The government is stressing this but nobody is listening. Obviously some knows why it's just a line and don't want to say it, others simply don't know anything.

What China wants isn't the territory, it's the leadership role in the area. Obviously no one would simply recognize a country that had previously been poorer than they are, this is a quick and painless way to erase all doubt who the dominate power is.

It's one thing to be forced to give up, quite another to bestow.

If you want proof, China's spy ship to RIMPAC, China's transit in Alaska, China's quarterly transit through non-disputed Japanese waters, all points to the eventual change in China's stance, or else we wouldn't contract ourselves on such an important issue.

BTW, this isn't good for you, this just means for as long as the US isn't an isolationist power, we will be locked in a battle for supremacy, it will just change from SCS to another theater, after we win here.

Do you support Manifest Destiny? I thought we are not blind nationalists, but I guess if you want this discussion to be that.

Anyone who says China isn't the owner of these islands can go straight to hell, or the Philippines, which ever one is closer.

It is 2016, so take your own advice and know that this isn't 1996.

As to fight against imperialism. We were the OG Imperialists. Also if we were to count what we fought for to what we are now, this imperialism bs wouldn't even crack the top 100.

I mean we are reforming our IPO system to have less government participation. Which communist system even has a stock market.

China should respect it's neighbors and not bully them.
