A high-powered Bangladeshi delegation will visit three Latin American countries next month aiming to explore new export destinations for the country, an official of the ministry of commerce (MoC) said Sunday.

The delegation, to be led by Commerce Secretary Mahbub Ahmed, will visit Brazil, Chile and Colombia from February 16 to 28.

Bangladesh is now heavily dependent on its existing markets such as the United States of America (USA), countries in the European Union (EU) and the Middle East (ME), China, Japan and Canada for its traditional items of exports.

There is also a good opportunity for Bangladesh to expand its export horizon to Latin America mainly due to immense demand of Bangladeshi RMG (readymade garments) and other traditional items such as jute and jute goods, frozen foods, homemade textiles and plastic goods there.

During their stay, the Bangladeshi delegation will have meetings with the government officials and private sector representatives of those countries.

"The main objective of the forthcoming visit by the delegation is to discover new markets in Latin America considering the massive demand of Bangladeshi products there. The volume of export to Latin America is insignificant now. There are good chances to gear up trade volume significantly," Director General (DG) of the Export Promotion Bureau (EPB) Salahuddin Mahmud told the FE Sunday.

The Bangladeshi delegation will comprise representatives from the Prime Minister Office (PMO), the EPB, the Federation of Bangladesh Chambers of Commerce and Industry (FBCCI), the Dhaka Chamber of Commerce and Industry (DCCI), Bangladesh Garment Manufacturers and Exporters Association (BGMEA), Bangladesh Knitwear Manufacturers and Exporters Association (BKMEA), Bangladesh Frozen Foods Exporters Association (BFFEA) and Bangladesh Association of Software and Information Services (BASIS).

After the visit, the MoC officials will submit a report to the ministry concerned for taking necessary steps by the government for grabbing export opportunities in Latin America.

Bangladesh's cumulative export earnings in both knitwear and woven items from different countries during July-December period of the current fiscal year (FY 2012-13) were worth US$ 10,035.29 million against $ 9,248.50 million of the corresponding period of FY 2011-12, registering a 15.38 per cent growth.

1. Export diversification is highly important.

2. South America is a rapidly growing economic region.

3. Brazil is a BRIC member state.

So overall great news to hear!

With a current middle-income population of 200 million and GDP growth now also being driven by oil reserves on par with Gulf states, this is a key state for BD garment exports into the future.
