Srinagar, Feb 7: Separatist leader and Muslim DeeniMahaz (MDM) chief, Dr Muhammad QasimFaktoo, Saturday urged Muslims in Jammu and Kashmir to have multiple wives and produce more children to ‘prevent a change in JK’s Muslim-majority status.’
In a statement, incarcerated DrQasim also appealed doctors not to perform unnecessary birth control surgeries without an excuse valid under Shariah.
“Muslims in Jammu Kashmir are fighting for right to self determination keeping in mind their majority in Jammu Kashmir and therefore expecting a favorable result of independence from forcible control of India. If the Muslim-majority status is changed into a minority, all these expectations are bound to crash,” he said.
DrQasim, who has completed 22 years in prison, is serving life imprisonment on charges of involvement in murder of noted Kashmiri human rights activist, HridayNathWanchoo, a charge denied by him.
“Indian rulers have been working on this plan right from 1947. Earlier it was done in a silent way, now it is being done in proactive and outrageous manner. The settlement of refugees in Jammu & Kashmir is a move towards these goals. Surprisingly, Kashmiri Muslims are themselves playing a part in their own destruction as the girls are being married late. This implies they will have less children-bearing capability,” he said.
“The excuse given for late marriages is that youth should become economically stable. Then after marriage, birth control slogans are continuously pounded upon these couples. To have less children fearing economic problems is nothing but ignorance,” he said.
Faktoo said almost seven percent girls in Jammu Kashmir are facing Polycystic Ovarian syndrome. “They are thus unable to bear children after the age of 23-24 years. While as almost 10 percent boys suffer from depleted sperm count and mortality. There has been a considerable increase in these numbers during the past 25 years which makes it clear that the food being imported here from India and the mental stress caused by the presence of troops is affecting the fertility of Kashmiri Muslims,” he said.
Justifying his argument, he said, “We have 30,000 widows and nearly two lakh orphans in Jammu & Kashmir and these widows are young. Islam directs us to go for remarriage of these widows.”
“We request local Imams to make people aware about the importance of having more children. Further, we request doctors not to do unnecessary birth control surgeries without an excuse valid under Shariah. We appeal well off Muslims to marry more than once and have as many children as possible. The Quranic tenet of justice between wives is only in providing equal provision and not inclination of the heart,” DrQasim added.
