A tiger in one of India's most visited national parks has been branded a killer and caged in a zoo, sparking protests from wildlife activists who claim the tiger has been wrongly accused and unfairly condemned to live out his life in captivity.

Is nine-year-old Ustad really a man-eater and if so, what made him kill? The question goes to the heart of the effort to boost the world's tiger population.

Here's what happened:

On 8 May Rampal Saini, a 53-year-old forest guard, was mauled to death by a tiger. It is claimed he was relieving himself in the tiger's territory when the animal attacked.

T-24 - popularly known as Ustad - was declared the prime suspect. The kill occurred in his territory and the large male tiger was spotted skulking near the man's body.

Ustad is now caged in an enclosure smaller than a football field
The tiger was one of the stars of the 400 sq km (98,842-acre) park.

He was fearless and, to the delight of tourists, had been known to sit in the road, blocking the path of the jeeps that ferry visitors around.

Controversial decision
This weekend Ranthambore National Park, one of the most popular places in India for tiger safaris, took action.

Ranthambore National Park is one of the most popular places in India for tiger safaris.
Ustad was shot with a tranquilising dart, loaded into a cage packed with ice to keep the big cat cool, and driven to a zoo 400km (250 miles) away.

Now Ustad is caged in an enclosure smaller than a football field.

It has proved a controversial decision. Some wildlife activists say locking Ustad up is illegal and are campaigning to have him moved back into the park.

The Jaipur High Court is to hear a case brought by Chandramauleshwar Singh, a tiger lover and a regular visitor to Ranthambore.

He says caging Ustad is a breach of the Wildlife (Protection) Act of 1972, which says wild animals can only be kept in captivity if India's chief wildlife warden is satisfied that they can't be rehabilitated in the wild.

Mr Singh maintains that the evidence to make that judgement isn't available because, he says, the decision to move Ustad was made without "any scientific probe or investigation into the circumstance of the attack".

He argues that the attack on the guard was an aberration, that Mr Saini was only attacked because he had trespassed onto the tiger's territory.

Ustad lived near a temple visited by thousands of pilgrims every day for almost eight years without incident, he claims.

Mr Singh argues the real reason the park decided to move Ustad was because of pressure from the local tourist industry, which feared visitors would be frightened off by the presence of a man-eater.

A month ago I took my four children to Ranthambore. We were lucky enough to spot a tiger, a thrilling moment for us.

I'm proud to say I even managed to get a picture of it. My kids tease me about the photo - can you spot the big cat?

The tiger we saw may have been a long way away from us but had I known there was a man-eater on the loose I'd have thought twice about driving around the park in an open jeep.

And one of India's most respected wildlife experts supports the park's decision to relocate Ustad.

"In my 40 years of experience of the tigers of Ranthambore, T-24 is the most dangerous tiger I have ever encountered," Valmik Thapar told the Hindustan Times newspaper.

He paints a very different picture of Ustad's behaviour.

The tiger has a grim record of previous offences. The park says this is his fourth human kill.

T-24 was accused of killing a 23-year-old local man in 2010 and a 19-year-old boy in March 2012.

He is alleged to have struck again in October 2012, when another forest guard was savaged.

'Benefit of doubt'
And he is not just a killer. According to Mr Thapar, the corpses of the villagers were partly devoured.

The only reason the tiger didn't eat the forest guards was because their bodies were retrieved while the tiger was kept at bay, he claims.

He says the problem is that Ustad has lost his fear of humans.

"After the first two kills I had suggested that this tiger be relocated to a captive enclosure but the tiger was given the benefit of the doubt," says Mr Thapar.

The case raises questions for tiger conservation worldwide because India has been very successful in its efforts to increase its tiger population.

There are more than 2,000 tigers in India
In January it announced that tiger numbers were up by a third, from 1,706 in 2011 to 2,226 in 2014.

Yet over the last century 93% of the habitat in which tigers used to live has been lost. Meanwhile the human population continues to grow.

That means people and tigers meet more often, occasionally with disastrous results.

More than 60 people are killed by tigers every year in India.

The fear is that the stories of man-eaters like Ustad will turn people against tigers, undermining the long-term conservation effort.

"Our feelings today must be for the families who suffered tragically in these five years that have gone by," says Mr Thapar.

"Any person or group who believed that he should have not been relocated would have to bear the responsibility on their shoulders for the next human kill and the accelerating conflict that could result."

He is adamant that relocation is the right decision.

"T-24 was given the maximum benefit of doubt that any man-eating tiger has ever got in recent Indian history."

But ultimately it will be the court in Jaipur on 28 May that will decide Ustad's fate.

Isn't he the one who came out due to broken fence and killed?

"Imprisoning" animals is wrong, but eating them is alright?

Seems wrong to keep him in captivity because we keep encroaching on his territory.

He is an apex predator like us. He is our equal in the food chain. The cattle, sheep, chicken etc that we both consume were meant to eaten by somebody or their populations will keep rising till it becomes unsustainable.

There are no fence in a forest. Tigers roam free in the forest of Ranthambhore. I have seen this tiger since his childhood.

@sancho
He has been a descent fella. But in previous 3 years he has killed 4 people. Basically this tiger has lost the natural fear of human beings and had become dangerous to human life. If feel sad for him, but had he not been caged next incident was due to happen sooner or later. This would have put up negative effect on the overall conservation efforts and the local people might have turned hostile for wild life and we would have seen many cases of poisoning etc (good for tigers of ranthambhore that the last two people this tiger killed were Forest Guards and not the general local people).

This tiger used to live just around the main road to fort. All the pilgrims visit Ganesh Temple used to pass from his area. Had this tiger been a man eater he would have killed 100s of people by now. He killed people only when he felt they are encroaching into his territory. Just that tiger had lost fear of human beings unlike other tigers...

That's the zoo one sorry I mixed up

. . .
why on earth we have zoo in the first place? they are not showpieces
we are talking about tiger in forest.. not zoo...
about zoos, some say it helps ordinary people in understanding why wild animals need to be conserved(PR exercise for animals), and many zoos have breeding programs to boost population.

you have caged him which means he was not in real forest :) anyway my point is do not encroach their area nor cage them in zoo , Tigers always mesmerize me . I love this creature while snakes are so fascinating beautiful while i find mouses (small ones) cute innocent not the ugly ones.

Because we are weak and egotistical and probably the cruellest animal species.
indeed it is human instinct no wonder We have a novel Lord of the Flies taught to us in English literature at graduate level which is about the same think cruel instinct of human

you did not read the post, Ustad has been accused of killing 4 people, most recently a forest guard... he also partially devoured 3 of his kills thus accused of being maneater.
He is under trial(in an eclosure not in zoo), the case is in jaipur court, both sides have arguments but I guess defendant will lose.

killing is one thing, eating humans is not good.

Keeping any living thing in a cage or under your control is disgusting. It is no different to slavery.

This media reporting is wrong actually. They have actually done wrong to this tiger.

Let me tell you all the incidents correctly:

1. First kill was inside forest of a person named Ghamandi. Tiger did not eat any part of it.
2. Second kill was also deep inside forest. Tiger did not eat it. God knows why the person went to that place.
3. Third kill was of a forest guard inside forest (apparently he had come face to face with tiger by accident). The guard was there to keep check on labours who were there to build the road for vehicles (used for petroling inside the forest and tourism). Tiger did not eat this kill as well. But he tried to defend with all might and the forest department had a real tough time to drive the tiger away from his kill.
4. In the last kill also the tiger just killed and was driven off by other guards.

So he did not eat any of his kills. So basically not a man-eater...
