The chances China has surpassed the US in engine technology are next to none.

What most people dont understand is that leading only in AI is enough for china to take over. Its what actually would matter in the future. Pretty soon the chinese AIs will solve their tech gap with US. Infact they will rocket past US once their AI reaches that level.

Most of these unicorns do is find newer more innovative ways to make money out of nothing or through unhealthy consumption...very few are doing any hard sciences...
