Acting President Abdul Hamid is going to be elected to the highest office of the republic in the parliament session beginning tomorrow.
His nomination became clear during a meeting of the Awami League Parliamentary Board on Friday as the ALPB chairman and Prime Minister, Sheikh Hasina, hinted that Hamid would be nominated as next president, meeting sources said.
The meeting, however, adjourned till April 22 while the meeting of the Awami League Parliamentary Party will be held on April 21.
Hamid is expected to submit the nomination papers after the meeting of the Awami League Parliamentary Party.
The matter of presidential elections came on the table after the death of countrys 19th President, Zillur Rahman, who passed away at a Singaporean hospital on March 20.
Besides, the Election Commission also announced a date for holding the Presidential elections to fill the vacancy in the presidency following the death of Zillur Rahman.
As per the schedule, nomination papers will be received from 10:00am to 4:00pm on April 21 while the scrutiny will be held on April 22 at the office room of the CEC as he acts as the returning officer of the elections.
The deadline for withdrawal of candidacy is April 24 and the voting will take place in parliament from 3:00pm to 6:00pm.
The meeting also interviewed 14 contestants for the Naogaon-5 by-polls as the parliament seat fell vacant following the death of Abdul Jalil.
Partys former general secretary, Abdul Jalil passed away on March 6 while undergoing treatment in Singapore.
Jalils widow, Rehana Jalil, AL Naogaon president and general secretary AKM Fazle Rabbi and Abdul Malek respectively faced the board for getting party ticket for the polls, slated for May 25.
The candidacy will be declared on April 22 after the meeting of the ALPB, sources said.
Chaired by Sheikh Hasina, the meeting also strongly criticised opposition leaders Khandaker Mosharraf Hossain and Sadeque Hossain Khoka for the comments on Fatikchhari where at least three BCL activists were killed and scores of others left injured.
The two BNP leaders asked the party men to spread the Fatikchhari incident across the country.
Meeting sources said the ALPB leaders urged the premier to bring the two leaders to book for their comments. The 17th session of the ninth parliament begins at 5:30pm tomorrow, with presidential polls on top of the topics to be dealt with.
Acting President Abdul Hamid summoned the parliament session where the 20th President of the country will be elected.
Abdul Hamid, also Speaker of the House, will address the inaugural session as per Article 72(1) of the constitution, said a release of the parliament secretariat.
The session is of maximum 10 days duration. Chief Whip Abbus Shahid urged the opposition to attend the parliament session.
On April 9, the Election Commission announced the schedule for the presidential election as the post of President fell vacant following the death of President Zillur Rahman on March 20.
As per the schedule, the election will be held on April 29. The last date for submitting nomination is April 17 while withdrawal of candidature is April 24.

Meanwhile, Dhaka Metropolitan Police (DMP) has imposed restrictions on carrying of firearms, explosives and other harmful objects as well as staging of rally and demonstration in areas surrounding Sangsad Bhaban as the 9th parliament goes into 17th session tomorrow (Sunday).
The restrictions will come into effect from 12:00am on Saturday night and remain in force till the conclusion of the 17th session, said a DMP press release on Friday.
DMP Commissioner Benazir Ahmed slapped the restrictions under section 28 and 29 of Police Ordinance 1976 to ensure smooth and uninterrupted functioning of the session.
The areas kept within the purview of the restrictions are: Mahakhali crossing to Bangla Motor crossing, western part of Bangla Motor Link Road to Saarc Fountain, eastern part of Panthapath to Farmgate via Green Road Link Road, Shyamoli crossing to Dhanmondi 16 (old 27) link road, Rokeya Sarani Link Road to Bijoy Sarani Parjatan crossing via old 9th division (airplane) crossing, eastern part of Indira Road to Manik Miah Avenue western part and restricted area of Jatiya Sangsad Bhaban and all the roads and lanes in the area.
