RAWALPINDI: Only 35 metro buses are operating between the twin cities of Rawalpindi and Islamabad, while the other half are still parked at the bus depot, due to a lukewarm response from commuters.

The Punjab government procured 68 metro buses to run between Rawalpindi and Islamabad, on a route that cost Rs44.8 billion to construct. The project is considered one of the most expensive in the country.

A senior official from the Rawalpindi Development Authority (RDA) told Dawn that less than 30 buses were operating on the metro bus route due to a lack of passengers.

He said that 80,000 passengers, on average, use the service to commute between the twin cities daily, despite the government’s claim that 150,000 passengers would use the service every day.

He said the government’s estimates had proven incorrect, and that the number of commuters had not increased in six months. He added that the government planned to procure 32 more buses, since it constructed a bus depot at Peshawar Mor that can accommodate over 100 buses.

Only 35 buses operating between twin cities due to a shortage of passengers
He also said that, at many stations, elevators were not being used by senior citizens as they were defected. He said that most people relied on the escalators and stairs rather than the elevators.

“Third party evaluation of the project will start soon, after the project’s two main components – the Peshawar Mor interchange and the command and control building – have been completed. These issues will appear before the government after this,” he said.

However, many bus stations have seen crowds and long queues – which the passengers blame on a shortage of buses. “I tried to catch the bus at Chandni Chowk to go to Saddar, and after waiting for 20 minutes, I couldn’t find a seat because people were crammed into the buses coming from Islamabad,” Ashar Ahmed, a passenger, said.

Another passenger, Mohammad Naseem, said the bus service was good, but that the government needed to increase the number of buses operating on the route.

He said the government was saving fuel and running fewer buses. “An artificial crowd was created deliberately to show that people thronged to metro bus stations to avail the service provided by the government,” he claimed.

The Metro Bus Project Monitoring Committee chairperson, former MNA Hanif Abbasi, confirmed that half of the total fleet of buses was being used due to lower passenger numbers.

He said that, at present, 35 buses are operating on the route, and that the operational manager would increase the number of buses when the number of passengers increases.

He said that, at present, 130,000 people travel between Rawalpindi and Islamabad on the metro bus.

When contacted, Rawalpindi Commissioner Sajid Zafar Dall said more than 35 buses were operating, to cater to 135,000 daily commuters.

Sorry but where is the Corruption... Sheikh Rasheed and Asad Umer had some proofs and they even said it on Media that they are going in Supreme court but what happened to that part? Even AsAd Umer said it on Media that this project cost 4 billion rupees according to ADB report and Gov is making it in 48 Billion corruption of 44 Billion but we didn't saw him going to supreme court why?

If the Gov Projected 150,000 people and didn't not succeed to achieve that target so what's the fuss about that there are about 5 routes planned that meets in Saddar and Faizabad (Faizabad-Rawat route) obviously more people will travel it and Gov is starting Feeder Buses

Now those buses which are not being utilized can be send to Lahore as it's quiet crowd there or can be used in Multan as it's under construction.... but now in the future let's say this 80000 people increased to 200,000 cause population is increasing and new routes already planned then these elevated and trenched tracks can be converted into Metro trains

no huge funds would be needed .... so if you have any proof of corruption on this Metro route please given them to Asad Umer or Sheikh Rasheed so that they can go to Supreme court cause they got so busy in Dharna that they forgot to file a case :D :D

Yes you are right when PTI MNA took the ballot boxes in his car, IK and KPK gov took a serious action against him, that MNA was he was doing it to make sure prevent rigging, but who gave him this authority in the first place ..

There are alot of other corruption issues in KPK which are not being handled by KPK gov ..

80,000 passengers is a huge figure , PTI and their cousin Sh Rasheed assessed that metro will hardly get any passenger . People of Pindi and Islamabad have answered about the wrong propaganda of PTI in local bodies elections . PTI will work anti people and will be answered subsequently in GE 2018.

Demand for Metro Buses Increased

Well the passengers of Metro bus in Lahore are facing huge number of problem during their Journey. Punjab Government has no doubt provided a cheap source of transportation to the public but thats not it. There are several problems that the commuters of the bus service have to bear everyday they use t the service. According to the reports an average of 180000 people use this mega transport project but Metro project is not enough to carry all those passengers comfortably. Long lines can been seen at the stations where passengers wait for their turn to get in to Metro bus for a cheap journey.

Though the buses are luxurious but its journey in Lahore isn’t. The reason behind it is that users of the service are more there is huge lack of buses. According to an official the sometimes the numbers of commuters increases to 200000 per day which is a huge figure. Keeping in view the the mega mass of people at least 40 more buses are required for the 27 KM long route. There is capacity of 39 seats in a metro bus and standing capacity of 120 people with the buses moves on with at least overloading of 40 people which is not only making the passengers suffer but the engines of the buses are also suffering.

my brothers money spent on metro buses should have been invested priority based e.g lifting up the condition of hospitals & government schools in Punjab, more clean water should be provided to ppl, up gradation of 50yrs old sewage system, more mini dams in Punjab to counter electricity, in development of small cities in south Punjab etc.....
