After MOD Scrapped 6000 cr tender to Purchase 197 light Helicopters from a Foreign vendor , HAL sensing an opportunity to bag more order for its Light Utility Helicopter (LUH) project immediately had an Internal meeting and has decided to speed up the project to meet its original 2015 deadline for its first flight.
irdw.org had confirmed in past that HAL is still carrying out tests on Ground Test Vehicle (GTV) of LUH and first flight might miss 2015 deadline, But with scrapping of the tender it means that only HAL's LUH will be first to enter into service and if delays are avoided HAL might be able to supply all Light helicopters required by Indian armed forces .
Indian Armed forces have joint requirement of 400 Light Utility Helicopters to replace vintage fleet of Cheetah and Chetak choppers used to move troops and equipment to high altitude locations like Siachen. But HAL which is still not invested in Production facility for Manufacturing Light Utility Helicopters in their complex, will find it difficult to meet high demands of Armed forces and it is likely that MOD might pull in Private players for Licence Manufacturing to keep two separate production line running .
HAL recently has decided to go in for a critical design review of the rotor system which was developed for the Light Utility Helicopter prototype to avoid any issues which could come up during the rig tests and flight tests .HAL is expected to develop three prototypes in quick succession to ensure that design validation, flight testing and certification of the basic version are completed without undue delay. But if delays do occur there is possibility of Private companies partnering with Foreign companies for local manufacturing of light helicopters which was recently scrapped , clearly onus lies with HAL to deliver LUH at earliest and also enter into its production as quickly as possible to take larger share of LUH requirements by Armed forces
HAL to double its efforts on LUH Project now | idrw.org
