The Municipal Police (French: Police Municipale) are the local Police of towns and cities in France.
There are ~20.000 municipal police officers in 3,500 (out of ~36.000 ) communities. The Municipal Police are one of the three components of French policing, alongside the National Police and the National Gendarmerie , with about ~145,000 police and ~100.000 soldiers respectively.
(All the men of the National Gendarmerie and Nationale Police carry guns (SP-2022) while in the Police Municipale, few carry guns, for exemple, the men of the Police Municipale in my city carry guns, while in the next city, they don't,it depends on the city and the mayor choices, but since Charlie Hebdo attack, many mayors want to equip them with guns, the state will help every city with a Municipal Police that want to buy guns and body armors, they generally carry batons and defense gas, and sometimes tasers, about 7815 out of 20.000 carry guns)
A far-right French mayor has stoked a new row thanks to his new poster campaign which tells the locals that police in his town of Beziers have a new “friend” – namely their 7.65 calibre pistols. Some say the campaign is more suited to the Wild West.
Robert Menard, a far-right local mayor, is no stranger to controversy after he banned halal meals in municipal cafeterias and then imposed a curfew on kids under 13.
The latest row he has provoked revolves around his new poster campaign to advertise the fact police in the town are now armed with a new friend – their 7.65 calibre handguns.
While municipal police in France are allowed to carry arms and most already do, it is the tone of the poster campaign that has left many feeling uneasy.
“From now on the municipal police have a new friend,” reads the giant posters placed around the town, next to a photo of their new handguns.
Sharing the photos on Twitter and Facebook several local residents say the ads belong more in the Wild West than a town in the south of France.
