Manama: Authorities in Bahrain on Thursday denied that it was in negotiations along with some nations in the Gulf region to buy the Israeli-developed Iron Dome anti-missile system to defend against the alleged Iranian aggression in the region.

Several media outlets reported the weapon will be brought through Raytheon and other US defence contractors who developed the Iron Dome with Israeli arms giant Rafael.

The reports also quoted Bahrain's Foreign Minister Shaikh Khalid bin Mohammed Al Khalifa as saying that GCC (the Gulf Cooperation Council) countries were planning a bigger Iron Dome than Israel's.

However, the Information Affairs and Shura Council Affairs Minister Isa Abdulrahman Al Hammadi denied in a statement the reports on Thursday, Xinhua reported.

"The Gulf Cooperation Council states are looking into buying an anti-missile defence system from the US, and there are no attempts whatsoever to purchase the system from Israel as claimed by the television channel,"said the official.

Like other GCC countries, Bahrain has no diplomatic relations with Israel.

GCC, Turkey and Israel, are the only places in the ME that are stable, modern, successful and safe. We should really work together and solve ME's problems. Though, I highly doubt that this news is accurate, I truly hop that it happens.

Of course this "news" or rather unfounded rumor turned out to be untrue. What a shock and horror!

I am sure that the GCC is more than willing to establish official diplomatic relations with Israel and recognize it the day the tiring Israeli-Palestinian conflict is solved.

When/if that happens expect booming trade ties and mutual investments. A lot of potential in that relationship. Goes for all neighboring Arab countries that surround Israel. Egypt, Lebanon, Jordan and Syria. Of course Palestine too.

As I said none of us are going anywhere so either we learn to live with each other like civilized nations and people or we continue status quo.

It's disappointing that it's possible in this day and age for a conflict to last this long and that none of the parties have been mature enough to end it or at least make some kind of progress.

The GCC (Gulf Cooperation Council) are in talks to purchase an Israeli Iron Dome anti-missile system, according to reports by Sky News. The Bahraini Foreign Minster, Khaled bin Mohammed, told the network that "the Israelis have their small Iron Dome. We'll have a much bigger one in the GCC."

The GCC includes countries such as Bahrain, Qatar, Saudi Arabia and the United Arab Emirates.

The Iron Dome system is used by Israel to intercept rockets fired from Gaza. The GCC are said to be planning the purchase in response to a growing stockpile of weapons in Iran and worries over sanctions being lifted after the nuclear deal between Iran and the P5+1 group of nations.

"Iran has been trying to undermine and topple government in our region for years," said the Foreign Minister. The US is reportedly acting as an intermediary between the Gulf States and Israeli companies in attempts to dampen anger in the region over the nuclear deal.

The GCC nations are currently fighting against Houthi rebels in Yemen, claiming that the Houthis are backed by Iran.
