Ahmadinejad in new attack on ‘savage animal’ Israel

TEHRAN: President Mahmoud Ahmadinejad on Wednesday called Israel a “dirty microbe” and “savage animal”, as Iran stepped up its rhetoric against the Jewish state after the murder of a top Hezbollah commander.

“World powers have created a black and dirty microbe named the Zionist regime and have unleashed it like a savage animal on the nations of the region,” Ahmadinejad told a rally in the southern city of Bandar Abbas broadcast on state television.

The commander of Iran’s Revolutionary Guards, Mohammad Ali Jafari, on Monday had predicted Lebanese militant group Hizbullah would destroy Israel in the near future.

Ahmadinenjad’s latest tirade came a week after the murder in a car bombing in Damascus of Imad Mughnieh, a top Hizbullah commander hailed by Iran as a great martyr who was killed by Israel. Israel has denied any involvement in his murder although it welcomed the death of Mughnieh, who was on America’s most wanted list for a string of anti-Israeli and anti-Western attacks.

The head of US intelligence Mike McConnell has suggested that elements within Hizbullah and Syria could have been responsible.

In a sign of Iran’s respect for Mughnieh, Foreign Minister Manouchehr Mottaki attended his funeral in the suburbs of Beirut last week and gave a speech.

“They (Israel) assassinate pure and pious people and then they celebrate it, like what happened to the son of Lebanon who had stood against the savage onslaught of the Zionists and broke the Zionists’ horns,” said Ahmadinejad.

He also accused world powers of establishing Israel to create a “scarecrow” to frighten and dominate other nations in the region.

The Iranian president has provoked international outrage by repeatedly predicting that Israel is doomed to disappear. He also courted more controversy by playing down the scale of the Holocaust.

The United States accuses Iran, along with its regional ally Syria, of arming and financing Hizbullah, as well as working to destabilise Lebanon in its current political crisis. Iran jubilantly cheered Hizbullah’s resistance against Israel in the 2006 war in Lebanon but insists it only gives the group political support and not military aid. Iran’s embassy in Riyadh meanwhile vehemently denied reports in the Saudi press that Mughnieh had been travelling around the world on an Iranian diplomatic passport, the state-run IRNA news agency reported.

Mughnieh was suspected of masterminding the abduction of Western hostages in Lebanon in the 1980s and of the 1992 bombing of the Israeli embassy in Buenos Aires that killed 29 people.

He was also linked to the bombing of the US marine barracks at Beirut airport in 1983, in which 241 American servicemen died and the hijacking of TWA Flight 847 in 1985, in which a US navy diver was killed.

Israel has also sounded the alarm over the Iranian nuclear programme, which it says is aimed at producing nuclear weapons. Tehran insists the atomic drive its only aimed at producing electricity.

On Wednesday, Ahmadinejad defiantly vowed that Iran has no intention of ceding to the main demand of the UN Security Council that it suspends uranium enrichment operations and proclaimed the country had defeated world powers.

“With the help of God, the Iranian nation with its unity, faith and determination stood and defeated the world powers and brought them to their knees,” he told cheering crowds in the speech. “World powers should know the Iranian nation considers nuclear energy its undeniable and definite right and will not accept any imposition or any additional cruel rules.”

the idiot ahamedinejad doesnt even have the basic courtesy most politicians have when the address other nations. he is accusing israel of assassinating a pure and pious man. pure and pious my @ss! the guy was a goddamn terrorist! and killing people by car bombs aint really israel's style. they would have just put a bullet in his head or used a guided missile, so i am not even sure if it was israel who killed him. even if it was he was a goddamn terrorist who deserved to die.

the faster israel blows up iran's nuclear facilities, the faster ahamedinejad would shut up.

Like i said before its not easy to just bomb the iranian facilities. Remember that Iran can hit almost all of the major cities of israel which means than unlike in iraq case when iraq was busy in a war with iran, israel took advantage of it and bombed the facilities, times have changed. Even if israel manages to attack the nuclear installations, it will not get 100% results and iran will almost immediately react hitting israel and besides not gaining 100% results means that whatever iran will be left over with will defeniately give iran a reason to build nuclear weapons.

su-47;138432]iran's nukes arent ready yet. i think the west is bidding its time. they need time to pull out of iraq. so they keep slamming sanctions on iran to try slow their enrichment process. once iran's nukes are about ready, they'll attack the nuclear reactors, blowing them to dust.
With 10 trillion dollars in debt.6000billion about to disappear from housing equity markets banks on brink of bankrupcy yeah i say you are right Americans are in position to Attack another nation.they will be lucky if they can pay there previous war bills to china and japan.

even if america does squat, israel will react. remember in 1980 they attacked osirak. thats when USA and USSR were supporting iraq agiants iran. israel still attacked them. to israel, national security is most important, not world opinion. its not a question of if, but of when, israel will attack Iran if USA doesnt
Iranians attacked and did most of the damage to the reactor Israelis Followed on there foot steps and finished the job.but that part is always kept hush hush by Western Media as that don't look good for Israel.
Same Israel will attack and destroy Iran yet they couldn't even beat Hizbullah.shooting unarmed Palestinians and destroying there homes doesn't make you a super duper fighting Machine it just makes you a coward.Having every military weapon at your dispense and having your azz whooped By lightly armed Hizbullah PRICELESS.:enjoy:

I don't no which world u live in But biggest terrorist state in the world is Israel and biggest cowards at the same time.
guided missile launched in Syria by Israeli Fighter plane hmmmmm wouldn't that be considered attack on sovereign Nation.shooting some one unarmed and shooting some one that can fight back takes courage in your friends case they totally lack that.so yes it was the terrorist state of Israel that carried out the attack.
And if god Dam terrorist deserve to die Guess who is considered to be the biggest terrorist state by civilized world except Indians and some Americans of Jewish descent you guessed it.
If you don't no history may be ask some one who does Israel withdrew from Lebanon cause they couldn't fight hizbullah and left there Christian allies hanging to defend for them self over night.
Had there Azz whooped by Hizbullah during recent war will attack Iran yeah as soon as they declare su-47 king of england.:blah::blah:

Hey guys just a crazy thought wat do you guys think about israel attacking Pakistan i know in there deep thoughts we are there wat do u guys think ? i mean if they think about coming right next to door to us Iran that is any views??????????

an airstrike againt iranian nuclear facilities wont cost much $$$. i was talking about a quick, precision strike by stealth bombers, not of occupying iran.

never heard of iranians attacking osirak reactor. back up your claim please.

as about beating hezbollah, we all know how hard it is to beat a rebel group of cowardly rats firing rockets from civilian areas. you have to try squeeze them out without hurting civilians. moment civilians start dying, the world flares up at you.

defeating insurgents take a lot of time. Olmert got cold feet and pulled out before the job was completed.

i never denied the atrocities and often cowardly acts committed by the israelis. what i said was that the hizbollah commander who died was a friggin terrorist who deserved what he got, and that he wasnt the pious holy warrior ahamedinejad says he is. this is not a war of good vs evil. its a war of two factions, both having good and evil in them. and that guy was definitely evil.

If you don't no history may be ask some one who does Israel withdrew from Lebanon cause they couldn't fight hizbullah and left there Christian allies hanging to defend for them self over night.

you seriously overestimate iran. being unable to beat an insurgent group hiding between the skirts of women doesnt make an army incompetent. iran's vinatge tech army, navy or airforce is no match for israel's armed forces. i agree that israel is going to get whooped if they try to occupy iran, but israel can use lightning air strikes to destroy iran's nuclear powerplants. if iran launches BMs at israel, most of them will be taken out by israel's ABM tech, and then israel will retaliate with nukes. kiss tehran goodbye.

attack Iran yeah as soon as they declare su-47king of england.:blah::blah:

and i eagerly anticipate my coronation. should be sometime soon

Iran 'nuclear questions remain'

The UN's nuclear watchdog says it cannot provide "credible assurances" that Iran is not building a bomb despite new data supplied by Tehran.
The International Atomic Energy Agency said Iran had granted new site access but remained evasive on key issues.

Iran was still enriching uranium in defiance of UN resolutions and was testing advanced centrifuges to speed up the process, the report said.

Iran said the report was "positive" and would hamper calls for new sanctions.

"This report showed that our activities are peaceful," Reuters news agency quoted top nuclear negotiator Saeed Jalili as saying in Tehran.

'No confidence'

But the US said it was "disappointed" with Iran's failure to comply with its UN and IAEA obligations.

US Secretary of State Condoleezza Rice said there remained "a very strong case" for pressing ahead to a third UN Security Council resolution against Iran over its nuclear programme.

"This report demonstrates that whatever the Iranians may be doing to try to clean up some elements of the past, it is inadequate given their current activities," she said.

"What we all have to worry about... is the future in which Iran could start to perfect the technologies that could lead to a nuclear weapon."

BBC diplomatic correspondent Jonathan Marcus says the IAEA findings are mixed at best and not the clean bill of health Iran had sought.

He says the report sets the scene for renewed efforts by the US and its key European allies to try to bring in the third round of economic sanctions at the UN.

Senior diplomats from the US, Britain, France, Germany, China and Russia will meet in Washington on Monday to discuss next steps regarding Iran's nuclear programme.

Last month, the five permanent members of the Security Council agreed on the text of a new draft resolution against Tehran.

'Serious concern'

Tehran refuses to stop enriching uranium, claiming its nuclear programme is purely for power generation.

The IAEA forged a deal last August with Iran for a timetable to resolve questions over aspects of its past nuclear activities.

But Friday's report said Tehran had evaded a proper response to claims it had made covert efforts to "weaponise" nuclear material, as well as conducting high explosives testing and carrying out design work on a missile warhead.

"This is a matter of serious concern and critical to an assessment of a possible military dimension to Iran's nuclear programme," the report said.

Without this data, the agency would not be able to provide "credible assurances about the absence of undeclared nuclear material and activities in Iran," the report added.

In Vienna, Austria, IAEA Director-General Mohamed ElBaradei told reporters Iran had shown new transparency but this was still not "sufficient".

The nuclear watchdog reported in August 2007 that Iran had not suspended enrichment and was continuing to construct a heavy water plant, which could produce plutonium - a possible material for a nuclear bomb.

In December last year a US intelligence assessment claimed Iran had conducted a nuclear weapons programme until 2003 but that it had probably not restarted it.

Major powers push for new Iran sanctions

By Sue Pleming

WASHINGTON (Reuters) - Western powers on Monday pushed for new sanctions against Iran over its nuclear program as Tehran voiced defiance about any new punitive measures, saying high oil prices would cushion the blow.

Senior diplomats from the five permanent members of the U.N. Security Council -- China, Russia, the United States, France and Britain -- and Germany, met in Washington to discuss strategy over Iran and give momentum to a sanctions resolution still being haggled over at the United Nations.

"We continue to expect a vote soon on the draft sanctions resolution currently being discussed in New York," said State Department spokesman Tom Casey after the meeting.

He provided few details of what was discussed, but Russia and China were expected to argue for more "carrots" rather than "sticks" to persuade Iran to give up its sensitive nuclear work.

"They also reaffirmed their commitment to the dual track approach for responding to the challenge posed by Iran's nuclear program," added Casey.

The United States, Britain and France are pushing for a U.N. Security Council vote this week because they fear Iran seeks an atomic bomb.

But some nonpermanent Security Council members like Libya are unlikely to support the move, meaning the United States might not get the unanimous U.N. vote it had hoped for.

"Really we cannot be supportive of further sanctions," Libya's ambassador to the United Nations, Giadalla Ettalhi, told reporters as he went into a Security Council meeting on unrelated issues in New York.

Asked if Libya would vote "no" if the resolution went to a vote unchanged, Ettalhi said, "I think so."

TEHRAN REFUSES TO COMPLY

Iran's U.N. ambassador said his nation would not comply with a new sanctions resolution and considered any demand that it suspend uranium enrichment illegal.

"It would not be logical to comply with the resolution," said Iranian ambassador Mohammad Khazaee. "We do not see any reason to suspend our enrichment (of uranium)," he added.

An Iranian minister was reported as saying the economy of the world's fourth-largest oil producer would not be hurt.

"New sanctions will not harm Iran's economy ... High oil prices will help Iran to compensate," Economy and Finance Minister Davoud Danesh-Jafari was quoted as saying by the students' news agency ISNA.

The West believes Iran's nuclear work is aimed at building an atomic bomb while Tehran says it is for peaceful power generation.

The six major powers agreed in a meeting in Berlin last month to impose a third round of U.N. Security Council sanctions against Tehran and this meeting was a follow-on from those talks.

One U.S. concern is that Russia, which was reluctant from the start, will use Libya's opposition to more sanctions as an excuse to further weaken the U.N resolution, already watered down to accommodate Beijing and Moscow's objections.

Russia's support might also have been eroded by its anger over the decision by the United States and many European states to recognize Kosovo, which declared independence from Russian ally Serbia just over a week ago.

The new sanctions resolution formally submitted by France and Britain calls for measures including asset freezes and mandatory travel bans for specific Iranian officials.

It also expands the list of Iranian officials and companies targeted by the sanctions. Earlier rounds of sanctions were imposed in December 2006 and March 2007.

Iran has warned Western powers they would be the ones to suffer if new sanctions were imposed on Tehran, which has resisted any OPEC oil output increase to bring down prices from above $99 a barrel. Tehran has even supported an output cut.

Mohammad Ali Khatibi, deputy director of international affairs at the National Iranian Oil Company, said he saw no reason for OPEC producing countries to raise output as market supplies of crude oil were sufficient.

The Islamic Republic has threatened to review cooperation with the International Atomic Energy Agency, whose latest report on Friday confronted Iran for the first time with Western intelligence reports of work linked to making atomic bombs.

Khamenei hails Ahmadinejad for N-success

Iran blasts European Union heeding to ‘Zionist lobby’

Wednesday, February 27, 2008

TEHRAN: Iranian supreme leader Ayatollah Ali Khamenei on Tuesday hailed President Mahmoud Ahmadinejad’s role in the “great success” of the nuclear programme, amid threats of new sanctions against Tehran.

Khamenei also hailed the Iranian people and the conservative-controlled parliament in his remarks, which came just days after the UN atomic watchdog, issued a key report on Iran’s controversial atomic drive.

“One of the examples of achievements in last 29 years (since the Islamic revolution) is the nuclear issue,” Khamenei told Iran’s elite clerical body the Assembly of Experts, in comments broadcast on state television.

“Here the Iranian nation has rightfully and justly reached a great success and a remarkable achievement.”

According to the state radio announcer, Khamenei also said: “The personal role of the president and his resistance in the nuclear case is very clear.”

His comments came as Western powers stepped up efforts to impose a third set of UN Security Council sanctions over Iran’s nuclear programme to punish its refusal to suspend uranium enrichment, a potential weapons-making process.

Representatives from six world powers met in Washington on Monday on a draft resolution imposing new sanctions proposed by permanent Security Council members Britain and France, after a new report by the UN atomic watchdog.

As well as praising Ahmadinejad, Khamenei also took a swipe at reformists who dominated the previous Iranian parliament (2000-2004) and had suggested making concessions in the nuclear standoff. “Alongside the resistance of the people, the seventh parliament (sitting from 2004-2008), unlike some in the previous period, really stood and insisted” on the nuclear issue, he said.

“I do not know how to thank people who have stood up all over the country over the nuclear issue,” Khamenei added. Ahmadinejad has sometimes been criticised in Iran for his confrontational nuclear stance, but the comments by Khamenei indicate he has the backing in the atomic crisis of the Islamic republic’s undisputed number one.

The report also confirmed that Tehran was continuing to defy Security Council demands by enriching uranium and had started experimenting with a new generation of more efficient uranium-enriching centrifuges.

World powers fear Iran could use uranium enrichment to make nuclear weapons but OPEC’s number two oil exporter insists its nuclear programme is peaceful and aimed only at generating atomic energy.

Foreign Minister Manouchehr Mottaki told foreign ambassadors in Tehran on Tuesday that Iran had no alternative but to find a new source of energy to meet domestic demand as its fossil fuel reserves would eventually be depleted,

“Since a number of countries such as the United States are opposed to our scientific and technical progress, they try to throw obstacles on our path,” he complained. Diplomats at IAEA headquarters in Vienna said documents presented to the nuclear watchdog’s governors on Monday suggested Iran continued nuclear weapons work beyond the 2003 date cited in a December US intelligence report.

In a related development, Iran hit out at the European Union early on Tuesday, for condemning President Mahmoud Ahmadinejad’s description of Israel as a “dirty microbe”, saying the bloc had given in to pressure from a Zionist lobby.

The EU’s Slovenian presidency had condemned as “unacceptable, damaging and uncivilised” a stream of anti-Israeli comments from Iranian officials since the murder of a top Hezbollah commander.

“The issuing of such a biased statement by the rotating presidency of the European Union is the result of pressure from the international Zionist lobby,” the Iranian foreign ministry said in a statement.

“It is an effort to divert European public opinion from paying attention to the transparent realities of Iran’s peaceful nuclear programme and the clear content of the International Atomic Energy Agency report.”

The foreign ministry warned the Slovenian EU presidency “not to fall into the trap of the Zionist lobby.”

Ahmadinejad’s attack on Israel and a similar statement by Revolutionary Guards chief Mohammad Ali Jafari came after the killing in a car bombing in Damascus on February 12 of Imad Mughnieh, a top Hizbullah commander.
