West Bengal may lose NSG hub to Gujarat

NEW DELHI: Unable to find suitable land to set up a 'regional centre' of the National Security Guard (NSG) in West Bengal, the government is exploring the option to establishing it in Gujarat. The centre will house over 5,000 commandos of the counter-terror force for operational and logistics purposes.

Though search of land in West Bengal continues, the central government has, meanwhile, accorded 'in principle' approval to a request made by the Gujarat government to set up a regional centre in the state which will cover the entire western and northern flank of the country.

Kolkata already has an NSG hub which was set up in the aftermath of the 26/11 Mumbai terror attacks. Similar hubs were set up Mumbai, Chennai and Hyderabad as well in the past two years.

Besides the four 'hubs', the government had decided to set up two regional centers - one each in West Bengal and Andhra Pradesh. While the NSG got a 600-acre plot in Hyderabad for the purpose, it had to contend with only 34.31 acres at Badu, near Kolkata.

"Since the West Bengal regional centre did not turn out as large as it was expected, the centre is now planned in Gujarat. If all goes well, NSG will station 5,150 personnel there. Government may in due course increase the capacity of Kolkata's NSG hub which can cater to the eastern part of the country," an official said.

He said the NSG was scouting for around 600 acres in Gujarat and a final decision would be taken once the force found a suitable base in the state.

The NSG regional centre will have training and combat exercise facilities for the counter-terror and counter-hijack commandos of the force, which at present are only available at its main centre in Manesar in Gurgaon.

The NSG, in absence of the desired land in West Bengal, had also curtailed its plan to induct the sanctioned number of personnel (5,150) as the Kolkata regional centre could only house 460 personnel on the 35-acre plot.

Once the Gujarat regional centre gets the green signal, the NSG will be able to effectively command the western flank of the country which is now being looked after by the Mumbai-based hub.

Good step! Gujarat surely need NSG protection as it is one of the most fast growing and economically strong state of India. :)

5000 commandos? whts their actual strength? it was well under 500 earlier I think.

5000 personnel does not mean 5000 commandos. I believe the NSG in total is fewer than that number. The number must include support staff.

May be but this is what article says:-

No it might be the actual number of commandos. GOI has decided to create more regional hubs of NSG after 26/11.
The Hub in Kolkatta was reduced in strength due to less land given by WB govt and I think support staff don't need more land to get accommodate. It must be for training purpose.
So let's hope it's actual number of commandos. :)
4 * 5000 = 20000 commandos :D

And i think this one is going to be bigger then the one at manesar ??

The NSG as a whole is a seriously bloated orginsation with over 14,000 serving personal. However of this number there are only about 500-700 actual "shooters"- members of the SAG who are the guys on deputation from IA who are the ones trained in HR/CQB and the ones who actually go in and conduct the fighting. The rest of the force is made up of instructors, support staff and most annoyingly of all- the SRG, the guys who conduct VVIP protection to every Tom Dick and Harry who can forge a threatening note to their life. the "Direct action task force" which is made up of SAG guys and a very few SRG to act as support which is the force based at Delhi airport that is complete self contained and ready to be airlifted to any part of India to carry out CT ops. As such the majority of theSAG will remain in Delhi (300/400) with the remainder being shared out between the rest of the hubs now being set up. This means that in any emergency situation needing the intervention of the NSG will still require the assistance of the the task force in Delhi but the SAG guys in the nearest hub will act as first responders able to reach the site of the crisis fast and lay down an effective response to contain the situation. This is why it is also very important most states are now setting up their own specialised emergency response teams to be able to act in a similar way to these NSG hub units.

are you sure about the 500/700 shooters ??? What I hear from a trusted source(don't ask) was "1500 shooters" at Manesar and is going to be 2500 shooters now.

^^ I was talking about those deployed in Delhi. These deployed in Mansear are either re-training or on secondary standby. As such they really aren't going to deliver a particuarly quick response.

I think there is mix up here. Shooter boys were and are always in Mansear. After 26/11 they started deploying 9/10 teams in Delhi to reduce reaction time. Before 26/11 and even on 26/11 NSG team started their journey from MANESAR in bus to Delhi Airport. Waited for plane and then fly to Mumbai. Now they have given some air transport utilities but I don't know if they get it or not
In Manesar there are Trained teams doing practice and undertraining and retraining guies going through their actual training

Actually there has always been an NSG unit based at Delhi airport (even before 26/11) ready to deploy however since 26/11 this contingent based at Delhi has significantly increased in size and as such a new facility is being constructed at the Airport to house the larger ontingent as well as provide on-site training to them.
