What's new

Gujarat GSDP Growth 17.4% .

.
Because of more number of Gujarati speaking people than Marathi speaking people.
I think Marathis outnumbered Gujaratis in Mumbai (Not by much).

However, Gujaratis owned majority of the trades and industries.

.
My uneducated guess is that the existing dominant players are too strong - NCR, Mumbai-Pune, Bangalore, Chennai and Hyderabad. No other cluster has been able to replicate that kind of success. The big keep getting bigger because it is easy.

From observation, I can also say that Malayalis in IT industry are less common compared to people from other southern states. Maybe traditionally the preference for IT as a career is less in Kerala. The state also does not have a proliferation of engineering colleges like the rest of the country.
1) I think IT companies offshore to new players all the time. State should be able to expand with tax breaks etc.
2) Surprised to learn that there are not much engineering institutions? If true, then it can indeed be a bottle neck for tech. industry :undecided:

That's never been the case, although Gujaratis are a sizeable minority. Also, imagine Bombay being in a dry state.

Gujarat and Maharashtra, rich states with poor people.

As per the graphic, you think UP is richer than Gujarat? :disagree:
I can concede the point about Maharashtra but not Gujarat. I think Maharashtra's figures get skewed because of Mumbai and Pune. Interior Vidarbha and Marathwada regions are not that great.

But the map seems a bit off. E.g. Mizoram for some reason as 42% while neighbouring Tripura is at 1.2% and all other NE states are also doing poorly in ownership.

Is Nagpur not a big city as well? I've always thought that Maharashtra had more cities than other states in India.

It is an ok city. Maharashtra is a big state. It needs more growth centres.

It means income distribution in UP is better despite state being poorer in terms of GDP.
I cannot argue against your interpretation of the graphic. I can only doubt the veracity of the source data. Because anecdotal experience and conventional wisdom suggests that UP's income level is much lower than Gujarat. Many workers from UP move to other states in pursuit of employment. They do so because the wages in UP are very low. The same is not seen from Gujarat.

My evil brain says that Gujaratis don't own washing machines because migrant workers from cow belt states are plentiful there and working as dhobis.

Positive news are good because I've recently put 1000€ on investment funds what operate in India. Not much but it's more of an hobby than money making scheme for me.
