A woman officer, Wing Commander Puja Thakur, led the Guard of ceremonial Honour for US President Barack Obama at the Rashtrapati Bhavan today.

President Obama was given a 21-gun salute at the forecourt of the majestic presidential palace, where President Pranab Mukherjee, Prime Minister Narendra Modi and top union ministers were also present.

Wing Commander Thakur then walked president Obama for the inspection of the tri-service guard of honour. She is the first woman officer to lead a tri-services Guard of Honour. The gesture reflects the theme for this year's Republic Day parade, which is "Nari Shakti (woman power)".

"I am very proud to give the Guard of Honour to the most powerful man and commander of perhaps the most powerful forces," Wing Commander Thakur told NDTV.

"We are trained, but I also trained and practised for this," she admitted. She hoped that her proud moment today would encourage more women to join the forces.

President Obama will be the chief guest for the Republic Day celebrations tomorrow, which will see woman contingents of the army, navy and the air force marching down Rajpath for the first time.

let me say one thing..
india has all worst thing in planet .
but moment like this give us hope and confidance.. that we aspire to improve ,, grow towards the right direction
and tyrist with destiny will continue..

The achievement we celebrate today is but a step, an opening of opportunity, to the greater triumphs and achievements that await us. Are we brave enough and wise enough to grasp this opportunity and accept the challenge of the future?

Freedom and power bring responsibility. The responsibility rests upon this assembly, a sovereign body representing the sovereign people of India. Before the birth of freedom we have endured all the pains of labour and our hearts are heavy with the memory of this sorrow. Some of those pains continue even now. Nevertheless, the past is over and it is the future that beckons to us now.

You are proud, it is more than enough. She has lead a guard of honor, not conquered a battlefield. It is funny that this has even made into news. Maybe in coming days Indians will require all the Asian region to be proud on the clerk who checked in Obama into the hotel, the orderly who hauled his luggage into the room, the janitor who cleaned his commode, the room boy/girl who got him tea etc. etc.

It is a triservice guard of honour before Republic day, for the most powerful person on earth. Sure, she hasn't conquered a country, but you do know that much lesser events are covered in the media everyday, right? Like say, Aishwarya Rai's baby having a playdate with another baby?
