UN-SLIPPING CEREMONY FOR FIRST 105M OPVS FOR SRI LANKAN NAVY HELD AT GSL

11~27~2015~9~32~37~AM~1.jpg.jpeg

First 105M OPV (GSL YD 1217)

Setting the ball rolling for timely delivery of Sri Lankan Navy OPVs, the first 105M OPV (GSL YD 1217) was ceremonially unslipped at GSL on 25th November 2015.

Mrs. Ninette J.C.E. Madre Deus, senior most lady employee of GSL performed the honours for unslipping the vessel in distinguished presence of RAdm KKVPH De Silva, Sri Lankan Navy, Dr. Madhukar Gupta, Addl. Secretary (DPE) & RAdm Shekhar Mital, NM, IN (Retd) CMD GSL. Directors, Senior officials of Sri Lankan Navy and GSL were also present on the occasion.

SLOPV contract is one of the major export contracts, being executed by GSL currently for friendly countries. The contract has come into force on 17th Feb 2014 and it is creditable for the shipyard to have completed the hull construction within 21 months of start of construction. This includes the gestation period for procurement of steel and other material.

‘Unslipping’ is an operational process, where the vessel is taken through slipway from land to the water and it tastes water for the first time. Significantly, the unslipping of first OPV, designed in-house and built by GSL for Sri Lankan Navy come on the heels of Commissioning of ‘ICGS Samarth’ – first of the series of six OPVs by Hon’ble RM on 10th November 2015. Further, fourth OPV of the class is scheduled for launching on 27.11.2015. Yard will thus have a unique distinction of commissioning of one ship, unslipping of vessel under construction for export and launching of another OPV within a month.

Can anyone identify that ICG OPV in the background?

Probably one of the Samarth class offshore patrol vessels - one was commissioned very recently - total 6 planned out of which 1 has been commissioned - four under construction in which two have been launched.

Samarth class offshore patrol vessels

With a displacement of over 2,400 tonnes - these OPV's are heavier than Indian Navy's Saryu-class patrol vessels of 2,300 tonnes. India's largest OPV's to be commissioned till date.

Good to see Indo/Lanka defense relationship on sound footing, India lost a lot of ground due to their warped policies in the past

I reckon this will be commissioned as a coast guard vessel ?

You can't blame India solely, when the Sri Lankan gov't was committing many mistakes against the minority. Anyway, good to see things moving in a positive direction.

Good to see this.. I am looking for the Pakistani friends comments were they are calming India is blocking JF-17 sale coz she is afraid and they should arm Srilanka to stand along with them against India as every one in the region is against India

.
It would be far better if India put a stop to the daily poaching in Sri Lankan waters of thousands upon thousands of Tamil Nadu fishermen.
