Greece is negotiating with Russia for the purchase of missiles for its S-300 anti-missile systems and for their maintenance, Russia's RIA news agency quoted Greek Defense Minister Panos Kammenos as saying on Wednesday.

The report followed a visit by Greek Prime Minister Alexis Tsipras last week to Moscow, where he won pledges of Russian moral support and long-term cooperation but no fresh funds to help avert bankruptcy for his heavily indebted nation.

NATO member Greece has been in possession of the Russian-made S-300 air defense systems since the late 1990s.

"We are limiting ourselves to replacement of missiles (for the systems)," RIA quoted Kammenos, who is in Moscow for a security conference, as saying.

"There are negotiations between Russia and Greece on the maintenance of the systems ... as well as for the purchase of new missiles for the S-300 systems," he said.

The Greek defense ministry in Athens later issued a statement quoting Kammenos as saying: "The existing defense cooperation programs will continue. There will be maintenance for the existing programs."

No other details were immediately available.

It was unclear where Greece, whose leftist government is struggling to secure the funds to meet its debt repayments, would find the money to buy more missiles.

Russian President Vladimir Putin said after his talks with Tsipras in Moscow last week that Athens had not asked for money to ease its debt crisis.

However, Greece is keen to revive its traditionally good relations with Moscow, prompting unease among some of its European partners at a time of deep tension between Russia and the West over the Ukraine crisis.

On Monday, the Kremlin said Putin had signed a decree ending a self-imposed ban on delivering its S-300 anti-missile system to Tehran after world powers, including Russia, reached an interim deal with Iran on curbing its nuclear program.

Greece is bankrupt and how would they pay for non-NATO missile system ? Greece or/and Cyprus may probably offer Russian navy a base in Mediterranean.

Good point.

Is Greece going to sell the older version of S 300 and buy New version ?

By the way how many S 300 Greece is having ?

A full S-300 battery probably costs less than $150 million. Maintenance of the system and replacement of the missiles that have gone past their expected lifetime most likely costs much less. I guess that a Russian navy base is worth much more than that. It's one of the good decisions that Kammenos has made I guess, as few as these may be. I assume that he's talking about spare parts for the S-300 and it'd be good if he also got a deal like that for Kornets and Zubrs.

Again although I doubt that he'll offer a military base, it's something possible. It's going to be something more general and not a way to pay for the purchase of any specific military system.

There is no talk of selling the system we have and buying a newer version. Just maintenance of the current system. Greece has a single S-300 battery with 8 launchers.

Slightly off topic: Greece already has S300, but when Turkey wants to buy a Chinese system, which is basically an upgraded S300, and all hell breaks loose?

Total BS..... They have something like 350bn debt they have to finance.... Greece has a tiny economy.... It's madness..... They are already bankrupt and unless ECB provides more money they will have to default within weeks get out of the eurozone....

It's bogus news..... Russia also can't give it on credit as their economy has taken a nosedive following the Crimea annexation

Maintenance & upgrade, or just maintenance?

We'll see what will happen with the HQ-9. For now I think that Turkey's best SAM is the Hawk.

Turkey is working for its own missile system and has signed contract for the production of Patriot control section assemblies with Raytheon.

Roketsan and Raytheon’s Integrated Defense Systems signed a new contract for the production of Patriot Control Section Assemblies (CSA) Systems at Roketsan Elmadağ facilities on 17th December 2014. The scope of the agreement includes the production of control units for Patriot’s GEM-T Air Defence Missile, which will be manufactured by Roketsan.

The contract has been signed by Programs Vice President Mr. Ralph ACABA on behalf of Raytheon’s Integrated Defence Systems and Vice Chairman of the Board of Directors Major General (Ret.) Zafer ÇAMLICA and President and CEO Selçuk YAŞAR on behalf of Roketsan.

Why ?

Suppose if a country is having both systems from NATO and Russia. Will that not shoot enemy fighter planes , cruise missiles and ballistic missiles ?

What is important is radar and interception , isnt it ?

Chinese and Russian systems are always integrated to national networks and NATO's air defense network via buffer/proxy software. The US doesn't like it because of security reasons bla bla bla but nobody really cares.
