ISLAMABAD: Three weeks after assuming power, senior leadership of the ruling Pakistan Tehreek-i-Insaf (PTI) reviewed the country’s political and economic situation and resolved to take some “tough decisions” in the coming days after evaluating the possibility of a strong public reaction.

A strategy was also devised at a meeting, which was presided over by PTI chairman and Prime Minister Imran Khan, to deal with possible reaction to government decisions in near future.

There was no official word about the “tough decisions” the government would have to take due to “crippling economic situation”, however, Information Minister Fawad Chaudhry while talking to Dawn after the meeting hinted at further increase in the prices of electricity and gas.

PTI leadership devises strategy to expose wrongdoings of PML-N government

The meeting, which was also attended by several federal cabinet members and provincial ministers from Punjab and Khyber Pakhtunkhwa at Banigala, devised a plan to defend government decisions in the media. The information minister said the participants also decided to highlight the “wrongdoings” of the past rulers and the economic mess created by the previous government of the Pakistan Muslim League-Nawaz.

“The party has decided to take tough decisions due to crippling economic situation in the country,” said Mr Chaudhry without elaborating the nature of “tough decisions”.

He said the decisions would be before the public in the “coming days”. But he hinted at the possibility of rise in electricity and gas tariff when he said Finance Minister Asad Umar, Planning and Development Minister Khusro Bakhtiar and Minister-designate for Energy Umer Ayub Khan would have to take “bitter decisions that may spark public reaction”.

Recently, the prime minister had given a go-ahead to increase gas tariff by 46 per cent on average.

The prime minister also reviewed progress on the 100-day reforms plan of the PTI-led coalition government and called for prompt implementation of it, he said, adding that the meeting also discussed the issue of distribution of party tickets for the Oct 14 by-elections.

The PTI’s spokesperson and those of the planning and development, energy and finance ministries were directed at the meeting to remain updated on the measures being taken by their respective departments so that they could defend the decisions in the media and highlight the government’s point of view why such steps were being taken.

The meeting, which also reviewed austerity measures taken by the government and their impact, was told that the government had saved Rs80 billion through abolition of discretionary fund of the prime minister and federal ministers.

Mr Chaudhry said it was decided that the government would expose wrongdoings of the previous government to make people aware of the difficult economic situation.

The information minister said the PML-N had initiated several mega projects purely on political grounds, therefore, the present government had decided to review all such projects as well as international agreements inked by the last regime.

The PTI leaders at the meeting criticised the past government for what it called “ruining” state institutions and making no progress in upgrading the energy sector. They said the last government did not take any step to resolve the issue of outdated electricity distribution system. Similarly, they said, no step had been taken for gas exploration and improvement in gas distribution and supply with the result that the PTI government would have to increase gas and electricity tariffs to bear losses in both sectors.

Finance Minister Asad Umer criticised former PM Nawaz Sharif for taking wrong decisions and leaving behind unrealistic targets for the PTI government. He also opposed the last government’s decisions of tax exemptions which he said caused a huge loss to the national exchequer.

Test of leadership begins.Wishing luck to new govt.

You can expose last govt's decisions and shame them, but if your decisions start hitting people's pocket, expect goodwill towards you to evaporate soon.

.
I guess that if some one is going to make tough decisions then government's tenure should be reduced to 4 years.:pakistan:

.
There is no alternative. Either the government goes to IMF and accept their demands or take tough measures now for a better tomorrow. Yes its going to hit the pockets of the poor and the middle class specially salaried persons (Myself included) but one has to be realistic in our expectations. PM and his team does not have a magic lamp to fix the wrong doings of the previous governments for the last 70 years. It will take time however only an honest leadership will take those steps keeping in the future of Pakistan and its new generation. A corrupt politician on the other hand will do only for his vote bank and leave the mess for the next government case in point Nawaz Sharif and the mess he left for PTI.

Dilemma is the name of current situation. If they go for increasing prices, they will get public back lash and the haram khoors against whom the corruption cases have been built up will try to incite people against current gov. And if they don't do that then they would need to go for loans from other countries and IMF which have their own agenda.
Though the mid-term step would be get people to stop stealing stuff electricity/gas/water and have better tax collection, but what about current/short term steps...

Imran khan can adress the nation about the current situation tell people while its a tough decision it is a necessary one and should specifically mention that the last government is responsible for taking pakistan to this point where we are basically pennyless and have to impose tax and increase prices and there is no other way .IK should take nation in confidence in this regard.Pakistan needs to sacrifice their today for a better tomorrow .Take the bitter medicine or die.

.
If Pak folks were ready to eat grass to tackle the strategic imperilment, I am pretty sure they can brave this out for the betterment of the economy...

.
Test for the moral succesors of Bani Israel if they can change their attitudes and become a nation for once.

.
Imran shud address the nation and honestly put these two options infront of them, either we have to increase prices and taxes or we have to again beg in front of IMF and ask their opinion, ask the nationa instead of imposing the decision on them, include them in the decision making as an owner of this country, something that has never been done before.

Well another u-turn has been made. Gas price not to increase. So much for tough decisions.

oh yaar annualy he donates more than 25 carores to shaukat khanum which is his annual savings, he owns no business no job no investment, aik ghar bacha hai woh bhi de day national fund main ? jaan le lo PM ki ?

.
he donates not his money but of public money gathered from others.the point to bring in to light is that every time poor public bear consequences of tough decisions and those who are in govt are not ready for sacrifice.such decisions will increase poverty and it seems he will not be able to make decisions which will cause rich people in govt to pay more taxes because his govt will fall if he does this.his house is too big for p.m of country like Pakistan.he needs no house when he is living in p.m house.

2-Free Education for Students upto Higher Secondary via some kind of educational reimbursements program not same old Broken as hell Govt Schools
3-Subsidized Transportation for freedom of movement.
4-Free Justice System Including Police and Courts

Do this and i don't care tax 30% of my income i will happily pay. Provide me Health care, Education, Easy transportation and legal protection.

Simply moving it one way towards taxation and not moving towards the social benefits wont do.
Give these benefits and raise taxes by 30% Nobody will complain. give no benefits and Raise taxes 5% and everyone will come to your throat.
Give these Benefits on priority emergency basis no matter if Govt have to borrow funds from State bank by printing more money. Compensate it with higher taxes later.
