Dhaka, Mar 31 (bdnews24.com) – Opposition BNP on Saturday said Bangladesh lost the case of sea limits with Myanmar in the UN court and now 'deceiving' people with the verdict.

"We didn't get what we bargained for with Myanmar," BNP's standing committee member Khondoker Mosharraf Hossain said at a discussion demanding the copy of the full verdict be made public.

He said "The government is celebrating, while celebration is also going on in Myanmar.

"If Bangladesh had really won, why is there celebration in Myanmar over the sea limits verdict?"

Bangladesh lost more than it gained over the sea limits verdict," he remarked.

"Our government is trying to deceive people," Hossain said.

He was speaking at a discussion organised by Jatiyatabadi Mahila Dal at the city's Dhaka Reporters' Unity auditorium on the occasion of Independence Day.

On Mar 14, after a historic verdict by the UN maritime tribunal, foreign minister Dipu Moni had said Bangladesh won territorial and economic rights to the vast Bay of Bengal resources.

"We've got all we wanted," foreign minister Dipu Moni had said from Hamburg, Germany, where the International Tribunal for Law of the Seas (ITLOS) is based.

She said Bangladesh 'got more than it claimed' in its long-running dispute with Myanmar.

"Bangladesh claimed 107,000 square kilometres while it got 111,000 square kilometers area in the Bay of Bengal," she said immediately after the verdict.

The BNP leader, quoting a judge at the maritime tribunal, said, "The judge said in his verdict, both side won something and lost something. It's clear from the statement what Bangladesh won and what it lost."

Hossain, also a former professor of Geology department at Dhaka University, said, "The information I obtained from internet about the international court's verdict confirms that Bangladesh did not get what it claimed."

"We have lost many things. Bangladesh will not have sovereignty over 3/4 blocks in the eastern region," the BNP standing committee member remarked.

He claimed that BNP-led government in 2001 raised the issue at the UN to settle maritime disputes with Myanmar. "A desk was also set up at the foreign ministry at that time."

"Had the issue been settled in the United Nations, Bangladesh's authority over the Bay of Bengal would have been firmly established," he said.

"Because the clause 76 of the UN Law on the Sea clearly defines jurisdiction of a country on continental shelf," he added.

Whether we won or lost, there is no point in arguing now. BNP should just let it pass. Even if we lost something the gullible population won't understand it. Khaleda did the right thing congratulating Hasina in the parliament where as Hasina cursed Khaleda
for the asia cup final loss against PAK . Now people can judge who is the better and matured leader and we have to start
working on the verdict with India due in 2014.
