ISLAMABAD: The government on Saturday announced yet another ad hoc allowance for the government employees equivalent to 50 per cent of their monthly pay to provide some relief to the inflation-stricken government employees. The cabinet ministers, however, will face a 10 per cent cut in their salaries.
Though originally the government had proposed a 25 per cent increase in the salaries of its employees but when this proposal came before the cabinet it approved a 50 per cent hike.
But many were disappointed with the announcement, saying the government did not honour its commitment to double the salaries of the federal government employees in line with the military personnel, whose salaries were doubled last year.
The raise will be effective from July 1, 2010. This benefit would not be available to those employees, who are already in receipt of a monthly allowance of one-month basic pay. Medical allowance for employees in basic pay scales 1-15 has been doubled.
For employees working in BPS-16 and above, the medical allowance will be allowed at 15 per cent of monthly basic pay. Pensioners, who retired after 2001, will be allowed 15 per cent increase and those who retired earlier will get 20 per cent increase.
Pensioners, who retired in BPS 1 to 15, will be allowed medical allowance at 25 per cent of pension drawn while those in BPS-16 and above will get 20 per cent of the pension drawn. The minimum monthly pension has been raised from Rs 2,000 to Rs 3,000. The rate of family pension is to be enhanced from 50 to 75 per cent.
A number of other minor allowances for employees in BPS 1-16 are also being raised substantially. These include night duty allowance, conveyance allowance for late sitting staff, daily allowance and special pay.
