Govt clears defence projects worth Rs 15,000 crore - The Times of India

NEW DELHI: The defence ministry on Tuesday cleared several military modernization proposals worth over Rs 15,000 crore, ranging from the Rs 7,000 crore acquisition of 48 more Mi-17V5 helicopters from Russia to the Rs 4,700 crore induction of seven additional indigenous Akash missile squadrons.

The defence acquisitions council, chaired by defence minister Manohar Parrikar, however, deferred decisions on two mega proposals — the Rs 80,000 crore Project-75-India for the construction of six advanced stealth submarines and the Rs 15,000 crore project for 110 naval utility helicopters. Both the long-pending proposed projects are to be undertaken in India with foreign collaboration.

"The two projects need more deliberations," said an officer.

The biggest proposal to be cleared was the procurement of 48 medium-lift Mi-17V5 armed helicopters, used to ferry troops and cargo, for IAF. India is already inducting 139 of these helicopters — one has already crashed — under deals worth over $2 billion inked with Russia.

The DAC also gave the go-ahead to the induction of seven squadrons of the Akash-2 surface-to-air missiles, which have a 25km range against hostile aircraft, helicopters, drones & subsonic cruise missiles, into IAF.

IAF had earlier ordered eight Akash-1 missile squadrons for Rs 6,200 crore, six of which are being deployed in the northeast to counter China's build-up of military infrastructure all along the 4,057km line of actual control. The other two squadrons have come up at the Mirage-2000 fighter base in Gwalior and Sukhoi-30MKI base in Pune.

The DAC also cleared eight indigenous Chetak helicopters (Rs 300 crore), nine tugs (Rs 300 crore), dockyard repair facilities for Revathi radars (Rs 30 crore) and electronic warfare systems (Rs 200 crore) for Navy. IAF, in turn, will get four surveillance radars (Rs 270 crore), while Army 102 short-span bridges (Rs 490 crore).

If India did not strike a delicate balance then you will hear more shocking news from Russia but they will never alter the balance in region

You are reading too much my friend. India (IAF+ICG+BSF) have already ordered around 160 Mi-17V5s, this order for 48 is a follow-on order for the earlier deals that has always existed and had been pending for some time. The timing is irrelevant.

I wouldn't call it that. India has around 300 Mi-8/17 that all need to be replaced, the V5s are already being inducted (at a rather impressive pace for Russia it has to be said) and for the sake of commonality the IAF/MoD have chosen to go ahead with the follow-on 48 unit clause.

This certainly won't be the last V5 order India makes, there will be at least a further 150 to come, perhaps a Make in India option will be introduced for such vast follow-on orders.

i really hope so.. as hearing some staements from Russian side like the below is a bit uncomfy to my tastes. Just today i read that
According to Russian President Vladimir Putin’s special envoy to Afghanistan Zamir Kabulov, Russia will sell four choppers in the first phase, after which the contract could be expanded depending upon Islamabad’s purchasing power.
In an interview to news agency Ria Novosti, Kabulov said Pakistan needed the choppers to fight the Taliban. “Probably they would like to continue once they have mastered them. There are no obstructions,” he said.
While he admitted that Russia was mindful of India’s interests, Kabulov said negotiations were on with Pakistan over the supply of other weapons and defence systems, including artillery, in which the latter had shown interest. “They are also interested in tanks and artillery,

interesting.. Choppers for fighting Taliban.. interest in artillery,, tanks!!! and out came this DAC 48 follow on news.. so my thots went hazy.....

Russia has its own geostrategic compulsions to take care of, do you think the selling of 4 helicopters (that India is in the process of phasing out) will trouble anyone in North or South block?
