Governor Punjab Chaudhry Sarwar resigns after making anti-govt remarks

Governor Punjab Chaudhry Sarwar resigned from his post on Thursday following a conversation with Prime Minister Nawaz Sharif over statements the governor had made regarding the government’s foreign policy.

Sources in the PM House told The Express Tribune the premier had principally decided to remove Sarwar owing to multiple reasons but particularly because of recent statement by Sarwar on the government’s failure to secure Obama’s visit to Pakistan.

Sarwar had censured the Foreign Office for US President Barack Obama visiting India and not Pakistan and termed it a “failure” on part of the country’s foreign policy.

“I have sent my resignation,” Sarwar confirmed while speaking to Express News.

“I dispatched my resignation to the President House and PM House last night,” he added.

“I will address a press conference at 2pm today to share further details.”

Sarwar was reportedly eyeing the foreign minister’s post. However, according to sources, the prime minister had refused to accept his request.

Last year in October, it was reported Sarwar had decided to play a more active role in Pakistani politics from the PML-N platform.

“Sarwar will resign as Punjab governor and assume responsibilities in the centre in a few days,” a person privy to the development confided subject to anonymity.

Sarwar, a former British MP, gave up his British nationality to serve Pakistan on the invitation of Sharif brothers.

Through his diplomatic efforts, Sarwar succeeded in getting GSP Plus status for the country.

LAHORE: Punjab Governor Chaudhry Mohammad Sarwar resigned on Thursday, days after he called out the federal government for failing to enter partnership with the United States government as India has done.

The government has accepted his resignation, with Punjab Assembly Speaker Rana Iqbal acting as acting governor Punjab.

Sources within the Governor House said that Sarwar handed his resignation to President Mamnoon Hussain last night.

The federal government had requested an explanation from Sarwar, after which the governor handed in his resignation.

Sarwar on Tuesday at a ceremony of Tehrik Istehkam-i-Pakistan said, "It’s the diplomatic failure of Pakistan that US President Obama visited India and signed all-important civil nuclear deal with it that included some condition even against American and international laws."

US President Barack Obama and Prime Minister Narendra Modi this week unveiled a deal aimed at unlocking billions of dollars in nuclear trade and deepening defence ties. The two allies also said they will establish several bilateral mechanisms to identify opportunities to boost business, trade and investment ties.

Sarwar had criticised the civil bureaucracy, saying they enjoyed each and every perk and privilege in the country but had contributed nothing to the nation in the last 68 years.

He said polite methods to make them realise their duty had failed and now the only option left to teach them was use of “baton”.

The governor had said Washington should have given an equal importance to New Delhi and Islamabad while making its policies for the region. He said Obama should have used the opportunity to normalise tensions in the Indo-Pak relations.

The governor is expected to hold a press conference at 4PM today to explain his decision.

Last week, Federal Minister Riaz Hussain Pirzada came under fire after making controversial remarks about Saudi Arabia — a close ally of the Sharif government.

Pirzada called upon the great powers — naming the US and Saudi Arabia specifically — to allow countries of the world to live in peace and said they should not fund terrorists or arm them.

When pressed by the government to explain his remarks, Pirzada backtracked and said the media 'twisted' his words regarding Saudi Arabia's role in destabilising the Muslim world.

He can be helpful in bringing UK closer to Pakistan by few steps, since he served the nation before.

A man who knows his job as a minister :disagree::o:

The resignation of Ch. Sarwar is yet another elaborate conspiracy against PMLN government --- PMLN Logic.

Pmln is all about yes boss. They can't take criticism even if it's a positive one. It's a diplomatic failure and a huge failure of our foreign policy that Obama ha twice ignored Pakistan and travelled to India.
Even if we were not to get any nuclear deal, his coming over would given Pakistan a diplomatic boost against India which is trying its best to make us look bad.

When in government: PPP < PMLN PMLN < PPP When both are in the government then: Martial Law > PPP + PMLN

Was reported 3 months ago. we all know why...
