We need action and less words, we can all do our own little part. If the government does require human resource i know that in my mohalla alone there are people just itching to get some pack back, sons, brothers, fathers, sisters, mothers and daughters... We should follow the example of the Mongol's and everyone no matter how young or old should play their part.

If you are too feeble to fight, then just observe and report, be the eyes and ears. And if you are able bodied then join hands and flush these bigots out. All this of course is hypothetical but i am certain we can prevail. If we stop talking and start acting with Unity, Faith and Discipline.

Salaams

I have emphasized in many posts about the need for GOP to make a very organized and comprehensive attack on the terrorists in all forms possible.
I think it is high time that we take a much more direct approach to the problem.

I believe it is time that GOP should declare a Jihad on the terrorists and openly announce it!
I want to see a telecast presentation by our government exposing the facts of the organized massacre carried out by TTP and their associated groups and leaders. They should be declared heretics, anti Muslim, evil and sowers of death and destruction.
Fatwa should be taken by well known and courageous Ulema from across the world and Imam Kaaba should be asked to give his consent as well.
This shall do much to damage the TTP propaganda of following Islam.

We should be told what the government intends to do and to what extend will it go to save people from these terrorists.
In return government should tell people to keep faith and help government in all ways possible.

This is needed to make all Pakistanis realize the trouble we are in and what we need to do and at the same time stir some emotions and instill some backbone into the masses and agencies alike.

An open WAR needs to be declared on TTP (and all terrorists) because regardless of any peace agreement their barbarism is not being curtailed.

Our cause shall be just and the protection of innocents is the best form of Jihad in Islam!

On top of this some basic things come to my mind.

1) Press should be firmly warned not to air/print such terrorist organizations interviews etc. This is causing nothing but confidence surge in the terrorists.
Utterly pathetic thing being done by our media.

this would be tantamount to censorship of the media by the media but this is not the issue - it is the ambivilent behaviour of the media towards terrorism whereby they are not playing the role they should be, that is creating awareness amongst their viewers and readers that this militant menace is a clear and present danger to the very existence of Pakistan. how bad do things need to get before everyone realises that enough is enough![/I]

2) Emergency AT cells should be created and an emergency number given to people to call in case of any suspicion or terrorist activity. Top agencies and personnel should head the cells and react to every call while keeping tab on the caller as well.

the AT cell judges are afraid to meat-out severe punishments to the captured militants because they are not being provided protection by the very govt. they represent and thus are released

3) To support the AT cells, rapid response forces should be present in all the troubled, sensitive and threatened areas with minimum time to deployment and helicopter support.

good idea in support of point no:2 but where is the equipment and resources going to come from - these very same resources are required to battle the militants in their sanctuaries

Do let me know what you guys think as i have been dwelling on these lines since months and getting quite frustrated at our Government's meek stance and almost apologetic statements in face of TTP's false religious propaganda.

please see my comments in italics!

the govt. is too busy in their power plays while the militants are embolded by this feeble behaviour of the govt. further the army has decided to let the govt. decide how to fight this war within our borders - there is no convergence of views on how to fight this war! - this has to be the top priority of not only the federal govt but also the provincial govts need to play their role and not leave everything up to the federal govt and its security forces!

I'd be more than willing to rid the tumor that is hurting my country and providing it with a terminal pain. And trust me, I know a lot more Pakistani's (including myself of course) who're willing to lay their life down for the sake of our country's existence and safety.

Thats far from the truth. The biggest factor behind the inability to seal that border is the topography. The mountains, caves, valleys, scant population density etc. make it impossible to seal it categorically. Not only Pakistan, but all the world powers put together cannot seal the border.
...

ENOUGH!

I have outlined in several posts here a realistic approach to close down the Pakistan/Afghanistan border and its sieve like properties.
Do not talk of a fence that is ludicrous to contemplate so are mines.

I have also asked why has nothing of any significant been ever done.
I have no reply as truthfully there is noting to say except ineptness at government levels.

There are solutions but NO Pakistan government or the Army have made the effort.

Reason: No one wants to seal the border and that includes the GOP, GOA and USA.
QED.

Well, Musharraf started the sealing of the border, but got no support from the US, so in that sense you are right!

There was a very detailed plan to patrol the border on both sides which also saw the inside of a dustbin because of the refusal of the afghan govt to invest in the infrastructure required to accomodate the border force. pakistan has over 250 posts along its side of the border and another 250 were planned along with communications like roads, helipads and wireless radios.

Yes, but post are just that posts. They don’t move they really don’t deny the enemy anything.
Border sealing of any meaning must deny that which the other side wants. So far that denial is not occurring, it is all free traffic.

A real effort has to be set in place with or with out Afghanistan. Fencing has limited benefits and the fact that no agreement between Pakistan and Afghanistan has occurred about the border line does not help.

Why is Pakistan looking for US support in building a fence on its side of the border ? There are only small parts of Pakistan that Afghanistan also claims - maybe that part can be patrolled instead of fenced for the time being if US opposes - if there is no opposition, then just fence that too.

That's the sort of thing that happens along India-Bangladesh border - wherever it is not disputed, it is fenced. Where it is disputed there are BDR-BSF facing each other (and unfortunately firing at each other once in a while). At least ULFA/drug runners have that much less freedom to move.

I think the bigger problem in AfPak border is one of "who will bell the cat". You need absolute control of the territory before you can fence (or the fence will be taken down the next day). The deals in Swat/FATA etc. have made the Army not have absolute control of the areas where the fence needs to be put up.

(I am not an expert and am willing to back down from my views if any convincing arguments against "bell the cat" theory is available).

Pakistan started fence process but Afghani Forces (ANA) started firing obviousley they cannot do this without US support because they know if there was no US forces there they would be crushed by Pakistani Army.

Amen to that.
We need spirit and we need unity, faith and discipline.

We need to fight these monsters who are claiming to be someone they are most certainly not...followers of Islam.
What they preach is something which is their twisted brand of Islam, it has no place in the hearts and minds of Pakistanis.
They are trying to confuse simple folk by claiming to be anti US mujaheddin who feel that US is targeting Muslims.
They are just trying to cash in on the people simplicity and stupidity of people in some areas where US (actually every foreign power) is hated.

I think they have killed more innocent Muslims and Pakistanis than any other enemy of ours so what place should they have in Pakistan?

I said my Juma prayers today and the Mullah said
"O Allah please protect Muslim Mujaheddin and implement the law of Islam in the land"
I had a strong suspicion that the maulvi was referring to TTP as his Mujaheddin and by Islamic law he was thinking about TTP's brand of Islamic Law which i totally do not agree with based on my knowledge and studies.
Why he couldn't say that "o Allah protect us from these false Mujahideen who are killing innocents in your holy name"?
That is a question burning in my mind since the Juma prayers today.

We should simply gang up and stop any Mullah if he dares pray for success of these Taliban.

We all can do our part.
We should stand up and be counted.
Whether we fight, whether we write, whether we talk ... we should start an all out attack on these terrorists.
It is our duty as Human beings, Pakistanis and Muslims.

I do not say that Jihad is a magic word here.
All i am saying is that our cause is just and since TTP is already claiming to be waging a Jihad (utterly false claim in any aspect)...it is time we call their shot and wage a true Jihad against them.

Already they are targeting us in our Streets, Markets and homes so its not like it can get any worse but certainly it will get better if we are united as Pakistanis and Muslims in our struggle against this evil.

To unite Pakistanis and Muslims, all efforts should be made and i think a declaration like this can be the binding force for many who are yet undecided.

Brother, our troops are already doing a Jihad to protect us...alas our Mullahs are even questioning whether our troops are martyrs or not in this conflict!!!

Its time to declare that we are not in doubt about who the Mujahid is ... our soldiers are the Mujaheddin and they need to be told this by this entire nation.

Currently they are not only sacrificing their lives but also live under the burden that many in this nation think they are not martyrs if they give the ultimate sacrifice.

Our Army does not need us to fight (just yet) but they certainly need much more support.

declaring jihad on terrorists will create lots of confusion in the general public mind as to who is the real terrorists, remember terrorists can show themselves as good people where as they are not, this situation will result in the killings of lots of innocent people in our Nation, thus this situation will get out of control very soon and the concerned authorities will not be able to handle it anymore, thus in the end this decision will push Pakistan in a state of civil war.:crazy:

And believe me Pakistan is nothing like any other country in this world we are a nuclear power and have lot of modern weapons and loads of members of the general public poses weapons, these are some good weapons not just ak's, and we will not like to see people roaming our streets and holding weapons, this cannot be allowed in any case, and should be avoided at all costs.:what:

Role of our media!

Osama’s Biographer Has Advice for U.S.

New America Media, News Report, Viji Sundaram, Posted: Apr 03, 2009

Editor's Note: Western analysts are mistaken in believing that Pakistan is falling into the hands of the Taliban and Al Qaeda, Pakistani journalist Hamid Mir. Mir told an audience in Berkeley, Calif. this week. Viji Sundaram is an editor at New America Media.

BERKELEY, Calif. – Pakistan’s arguably most celebrated investigative journalist and editor Hamid Mir said that it is understandable why “Western analysts” mistakenly think that Pakistan is falling into the hands of the Taliban and Al Qaeda, when only 2 percent of the country’s population inhabits the “red area” where the two groups are concentrated.

“When you are sitting in New York, or D.C., or San Francisco and reading the newspapers, you are justified in forming this opinion,” Mir told the gathering in the library of UC Berkeley’s Graduate School of Journalism on Wednesday, taking a dig at the Western media. But he quickly noted that the West should not undermine the threat posed by that minority population of five million because “even 500 suicide bombers can create hell.”

Mir, 42, is best known as the only journalist to have interviewed Osama bin Laden, twice before the 9/11 attacks and once after.

He has put such major political figures as former Pakistani President Pervez Musharraf, former Secretary of State Condoleezza Rice and Afghan President Hamid Karzai in the hot seat on Geo TV, Pakistan’s popular TV station, where Mir is executive editor. He is currently writing an authorized biography of Osama bin Laden.

The March 27 suicide bombing of a mosque in the restive Khyber region of Jamrud in Pakistan that claimed the lives of 58 people and injured around 160 more, proved that President Obama was wrong in calling that region a safe haven of the Taliban and Al Qaeda, Mir said. Only 12 of the worshippers in the two-story mosque belonged to the Pakistani security force and the country’s intelligence agency.

That border region has also claimed the lives of several of his colleagues who were covering the war, said Mir. Many others have quit journalism, altogether.

“I’m able to share all this information with you due to the sacrifices of my cameraman and my guide,” Mir said.

He said the area is so dangerous because, unlike most of the rest of Pakistan, the government has no control over it.

Located between the Pakistan-Afghanistan border, the Federally Administered Tribal Area (FATA), is governed directly by the federal government through a special set of “draconian” laws called the Frontier Crimes Regulations that were instituted by the British in 1890, according to Mir. Those laws deny basic human rights to the people of FATA and have prevented the region from partaking in the socio- economic development that the rest of Pakistan has experienced. “That area is one of the most underdeveloped areas in the world,” Mir said.

He said that no part of the $11 billion aid given by the Bush administration to Pakistan in the last seven years was spent in developing the FATA region, which has no roads, no hospitals and zero employment, save for those who work in the flourishing opium trade.

“So if an 18-year-old wants employment, he’ll go to the Taliban, and if an 80-year-old wants help, he too will go to the Taliban,” Mir said.

The tipping point at which the tribal people in those border regions turned against the United States came in 2003, when former President George W. Bush began pressuring Musharraf to begin military operations against them, Mir said. And when innocent children were killed in those operations, the Pashtuns were incensed.

“For a Pashtun, if somebody kills my child, I will take revenge,” Mir said. “So bad U.S. policy isolated that area and led to bloody suicide bombings.”

Mir asserted that the stepped-up drone (unmanned aircraft) attacks by the United States – 46 in the last eight months-- are claiming very few Taliban operatives.

“In the 11 drone attacks I covered, only two low-level Taliban men were killed,“ he said. “But I saw dozens of women and children killed.”

According to Mir the “most important problem” the two countries face is that there is no proper border between them. The porous border, Mir said, is more than 1,250 miles long and has only two legal entry points. An estimated 13 million Pashtuns live on the Pakistani side of the border and about the same number live in Afghanistan. All Taliban are Pashtuns.

Mir asserted that the Taliban-generated violence could only end:

* If a border were built between Pakistan and Afghanistan, just as the fencing a few years ago of the so-called “Line of Control” between India and Pakistan has helped control the violence in the India-controlled region of Kashmir.

* If India and Pakistan begin peace talks to solve the Kashmir dispute.

* If the FATA regions are governed like the rest of Pakistan.

* If some of the $1.5 billion per year in non-military aid for five years the Obama administration has promised Pakistan goes to those regions to build schools, hospitals and roads. “Girls should not be prevented from going to school,” he said.

Talking to the Taliban is “not a bad idea,” either, Mir added.

Asked in a private interview if he knew where bin Laden currently was, Mir laughed and said: “He’s wandering freely in those mountainous regions of Pakistan.”
