Google performed the calculation in superconducting electronic circuits where temperatures are reduced so low that material is in a superconducting state. With IBM adopting the same approach, superconducting quantum computing has become the mainstream of the technology.

In contrast, the Chinese team employs photons traveling through circuits that combines mirrors and other materials. Because it does not require equipment to deep refrigeration and vacuum vessels, it is much easier to use.

"The Chinese technology will undoubtedly contribute to the development of optical quantum computing," said Shuntaro Takeda, associate professor at the University of Tokyo.

But Google's quantum computer is "overwhelmingly superior" to China's at present, Takeda said, noting that the Chinese computer is aimed specifically at achieving quantum supremacy and is not considered applicable to other calculations. Therefore, there is no current prospect for the practical use of the Chinese technology, and it is unclear how it can be improved.

Both are actually equally useless and non programmable, but the photonic version has the possibility of integration with fiber optics and going solid state that way while the superconducting version has no further room for development.

According to the world reknown Quantum phyicist Pan (he is the Top 10 most significant phyicsts today according to some Europe academic regulation body), the Chinese one can also do machine learning task, just like the Google's one.

Google's so-called quantum computer can only beat today‘s supercomputer at trivial problem set, but JiuZhang are not just beat today's supercomputer at trivial task, but can also at large problem set:

For large scale simulation:

JiuZhang finish the simulation in 2 hours

Whilst Today's fastest supercomputer need 12 billion years to do the same simulation.

Whilst Google's quantum computer will be slower than today's supercomputer in this case.

Overall, JiuZhang is 10 billion times faster than Google's joke of a quantum computer.

And besides the sheer speed, one major breakingthrough of Pan's team is they have done the unthinkable, they use photon to achieve 76 quantum bits, whilst the best team outside of China, can only put 4-5 quantum bits with photons, all the rest are resort to the super-conductor route, which are harder to keep and scale-up.

why don’t you provide some proof for your assertions...

You can’t because Google, IBM, Microsoft and others have developed programming languages e.g. Cirq, Q# and libraries for Quantum programming. The Chinese JiuZhang on the other hand has an arrangement of lenses, crystals, splitters and screens to deal with...you program JiuZhang by changing the arrangement of these lenses, mirrors and screens and so today it is limited to one application - Gaussian boson sampling.

..and China isn’t the leader in either superconducting or photon chip development so it doesn’t really matter if either approach is a dead end.

That's simply an interface language between classical and quantum systems. Google carefully picked a specific problem.

Asia nikkei? I know this shitty Japanese media always spread fake news about China. You can't take their article seriously if regards to China.

Who the hell is this Takeda to have authority to claim US one is better? He is a nobody.

Hey let them claim, you need to soothe heir ego. Google need to use subzero temperature for their superconductor based computer, there is another team working on the same tech in China in USTC. I am not sure why the US is fascinated with subzero temperatures, their vaccines need - 70....wtf,now they are importing Chinese freezer and dry ice maxhines by the hundreds. Lol

No it isn’t, Quantum Computing is already being leveraged to help answer optimization question around ML, 5G MiMo computation etc.

yes and JiuZhang created a light show that can’t be programmed....

he is a acknowledged expert on Quantum Optics.
how many papers do you have on the subject?

Associate professor only, he is not qualify to comment on Pan Jianwei work.

US simply don’t have the power to stop China’s rise. Even as a developing country China is already more than handful for the fully developed superpower US. Just wait until China becomes a fully developed country. It won’t even be a fair comparison with the US then.

But you are more qualified to render judgment on his opinion, what are your credentails?

He is more qualified because he’s a hyper nationalist.
