Global Times: China ramps up J-20 stealth fighter production after domestic engine switch

You claim current J-20 don't have domestic engines, what do you know "current"? A test bed in an international air show?? Do people really think China is this stupid to risk crash scenes openly in front of the whole world? Any countries had ever tested their unfinished testing engines in an international air show before? Guys, grow a brain please, you can bash China, but try some mature ways.

American F22 must not be the benchmark for China.
Americans have already moved on from this jet of the 90s to 6th generation jets that they are secretly flying.
even F35 is ahead of F 22 in many technological aspects.

China must aim at generation 6 planes standards while working on its stealth fighters.

China is already working on there 6th generation jets, we know Chinese secrecy and speed aswell

@Indos - Even J-10CEs supplied to Pakistan use WS-10B engines and so we can infer that all new build J-20s use WS-10B/C engines.

If China is confident to use WS-10X engine in a single-engined fighter, then it will be happy to place this engine on a twin-engined fighter.

.
Trial with WS 15 is not in process, ao in coming year we will see ws15 based j20s too

China is developing J-28 which might replace j-20 at some point in the future. Let us see.

F-35 is unmatched in the E0/IR spectrum to this day. It is capable of detecting, tracking and intercepting elusive UAVs, cruise missiles and even ballistic missiles when in range. This level of mission capability is beyond the scope of numerous jet fighters in service around the world.

F-22 is feared because of its unmatched stealthy characteristics, engine technology and classified aspects. It is being modernized in secrecy as well:

But yes, they have developed and tested 6th generation aircraft in secrecy:

Interesting times ahead.

China demonstrated a mockup recently:

It is a fighter-bomber.

1st working prototype will be possible in 2025. Let us see.

Who is Mai Chan, is he the guy who wrote Bible?
Maybe Indos meant Minnie Chan of the South China Morning Post. One of the worse Chinese military writer we've known. But she is Deino's favorite reporter!

J/K Deino. :p:

Indos probably didn't follow Chinese military that much, his information is a little outdated.

China already started their preliminary design on the 6th generation fighter jet when J-20 prototype was still being tested. According to the insiders, that how China works.

U.S probably doing the same thing when you see F-35 and B-21 flying, that means the next generation fighter /bomber also in the work already.

Global Times: China ramps up J-20 stealth fighter production after domestic engine switch

The maker of the J-20, China's most advanced stealth fighter jet, revealed that it recently broke records in terms of aircraft delivery due to high demand, with experts saying on Sunday that the J-20 has entered a mass production phase after it solved the last missing piece of the puzzle, the domestically developed WS-10 engine.

Since the start of the fourth quarter, Chengdu Aircraft Industrial Group Co Ltd under the state-owned Aviation Industry Corporation of China has been facing challenging research and development, production and delivery missions, as multiple users were waiting to receive delivery of many aircraft, the company said in a statement released over the weekend on its social media account.

In this period, the company completed several key test flight missions, and indexes related to aircraft delivery have broken record highs, the statement said.

Out of nine photos attached to the statement, seven depict test flights of the J-20, one shows a test flight of the J-10, and one shows the work of staff members.

This could be an indication that the production of the J-20 is being ramped up, Fu Qianshao, a Chinese military aviation expert, told the Global Times on Sunday.

The Chinese People's Liberation Army (PLA) Air Force displayed J-20s equipped with domestically developed engines at Airshow China 2021.

The switch to domestically made WS-10 engines from imported ones has made mass production possible, Fu said, noting that other systems on the J-20, including the avionics system, radar system and weapons systems, were already domestically developed.

Now that there is no limitation caused by the import of engines, and the homemade WS-10 engine has been tested on other aircraft like the J-10, J-11 and J-16, the J-20 is in a position to start mass production, Fu said.

Responding to an inquiry from the Global Times concerning the production capacity of the J-20 at a press conference at Airshow China in late September, Wang Haitao, deputy designer of the aircraft, said that China's aviation industry can satisfy any level of demand from the PLA Air Force.

It is good to see the industry is busy, because this means the J-20 has started entering service in large numbers, Fu said.

"In a short time, we will be able to see J-20s operated by all eastern, southern, western, northern and central theater commands, and become the main force to safeguard China's sovereignty and territorial airspace security," Fu predicted.

For the next step, the J-20 will continue to evolve, for example, by switching to use more advanced engines, Fu said

I am looking forward to seeing mass production of this aircraft.

I'm sure Pakistan is interested in this project.

China’s advanced J-20 stealth fighters are getting an engine upgrade, The WS-15 afterburning turbofan engine has significantly boosted J-20 performance

  • State television reports that the new engine has been put through a series of tests
  • It is said to have increased the aircraft’s manoeuvrability and combat capability

The development was highlighted on Chinese state television, with a report saying the WS-15 engine had been put through a series of tests. Photo: CCTV

China’s most advanced stealth fighter jet, the J-20, has a new engine that has significantly boosted its performance, according to a military source.

The WS-15 afterburning turbofan engine was developed in China and has increased manoeuvrability and combat capability, said the source, who requested anonymity because of the sensitivity of the matter.

That could take the J-20, or Mighty Dragon, a step closer to rivalling the American F-22 Raptor.

The engine upgrade was highlighted on Chinese state television on Sunday, with CCTV saying the WS-15 had been put through a series of tests.

The report did not say when the engine would be ready for assembly, but according to the military source that process has already begun.

“The J-20s are fitted with the Russian AL-31F engines and these will be gradually be replaced by the WS-15,” the source said.

They said there would be no change to the J-20s which have another Chinese engine, the WS-10C, also a thrust-vectoring engine.

“In the future, all J-20s will be fitted with Chinese engines,” the source said. “This is part of the localisation programme [by the People’s Liberation Army].”

Andrei Chang, editor-in-chief of the Canada-based Kanwa Asian Defence Monthly, said that while the WS-15 engine upgrade could take it closer to competing with the F-22 – as well as America’s F-35 multirole strike fighter and Russia’s Su-57 stealth fighter – the F-22 would “remain a threat to the PLA”.

“The aircraft is still the world’s most powerful fighter jet,” Chang said. “Besides its powerful engine, the F-20 is equipped with so many advanced technologies that still remain mysterious to outsiders.”

China’s military at present operates a fleet of about 50 J-20s. The military source said any new J-20s would be equipped with the WS-15 engine.

In comparison, the US military has more than 180 active F-22s, but Washington decided in 2011 to stop production due to their high cost and expensive maintenance, so the F-35 is now the main challenge to China’s J-20.

The F-22s have F-119 engines with afterburners and two-dimensional thrust-vectoring nozzles, while the F-35s use General Electric’s XA100 engine.

Zhou Chenming, a researcher from the Yuan Wang military science and technology think tank in Beijing, said the American XA100 engine was still about a decade ahead of the WS-15 in terms of the technology.

“China has so far just matched the American engines in some areas, but not in overall performance. It’s also not meaningful to emphasise one area because military confrontation is about a competition of systems and a contest of joint operational capabilities,” Zhou said.

“The Americans still rule the sky in the Asia-Pacific because it’s not China’s intention to challenge US air superiority [in the region],” he added.

China began developing the WS-15 engine in the early 1990s for fifth-generation aircraft like the J-20 but the project fell behind schedule, according to the CCTV report.

The delay meant the developer of the J-20 – Chengdu Aircraft Industry Group – instead used the Russian AL-31F engine, as well as Chinese engines the WS-10B and WS-10C, amid increasing security challenges from the US.

The Pentagon started deploying F-35s to the Asia-Pacific in recent years, pushing Beijing to speed up development of the J-20, which was first commissioned in 2017, six years after its maiden flight.
