Sentencing Bangladesh Chhatra League leader Badrul Alam to life in prison for attempt to murder Sylhet college girl Khadiza Begum Nargis, a judge has described Khadiza ‘a legendary woman who survived miraculously’.
In a 30-page verdict, Sylhet's Metropolitan Sessions Judge Akbar Hossain Mridha also said that women are still unprotected in the society to some extent and hoped the ‘verdict would play a role in protecting women’.
The judge made the observations in the verdict issued on International Women's Day on Wednesday.
"Women in the country are not confined to four walls as called by women education pioneer Begum Rokeya. But they are still unprotected to some extent, and the incident of Khadiza has proven that" Judge Mridha said.
The judge said women were becoming 'victims of insult, repression, murder and sexual harassment at every step' and blamed 'patriarchal mentality' for this.
Sylhet Government Women's College student Khadiza came under attack after an examination at MC College on Oct 3 last year.
The machete swung by Badrul, a student of Shahjalal University of Science and Technology, ruptured Khadiza's skull and injured her brain.
She was put on life support at Dhaka’s Square Hospital on Oct 4.
It took more than four months for Khadiza to recover after several surgeries and physiotherapy.
She returned home on Feb 24 and two days later appeared in court to give her testimony.
On Wednesday, the court sentenced Badrul to life in jail. He was also fined Tk 5,000 or two more months in prison in case of failure to pay.
"Khadiza did not lose the battle for life even after being hacked so brutally by the vicious element in society for rejecting his proposal. She is the icon of the women's world, victory and resistance," the judge said.
Noting that the prime minister and the speaker are women, Judge Mridha said women are 'still unprotected and repressed even though they are making progress in all fields.
"I believe the handing down of proper punishment on this day to Badrul for atrociously hacking Khadiza will play a significant and positive role in protecting the women," he said.
After the verdict, Khadiza told the media at her house: "I have got justice. I managed to overcome the harrowing days with everyone's help. It’s like a rebirth for me. Many thanks."
She hopes no woman should go through her situation ever again in the country.
