VARANASI: In a rare show of courage, a r@pe survivor of a backward village of Varanasi district not only went against the diktat of community elders and refused to marry the accused but also forced the police to arrest him on the day of wedding itself when the 'groom's' side was preparing for 'baraat'.

Reports said the girl was allegedly r@ped by a youth belonging to her community at Sajoi village in Jansa police station area on February 21. Without understanding the girl's trauma and taking her consent, the elders from both the sides tried to legalise the offence by marrying them off. But the accused refused to marry her and the girl lodged an FIR against him on February 25. However, instead of taking any action against the accused, the police allegedly pressurized both the sides to resolve the issue amicably. As the negotiations continued, pressure of community elders worked and the accused agreed to marry the girl. The date of wedding was fixed for Tuesday (March 24) without knowing the wishes of the girl. On Tuesday, even as the groom's side prepared for 'baraat', the girl called the police and obliquely refused to marry the alleged rapist. The police were left with no option but to arrest him as an FIR was already pending.

"The accused has been arrested and challaned under section 376 of the IPC on Tuesday," said Jansa police station officer Basant Ram on Wednesday. He admitted that several panchayats of the community elders were held to sort out the matter, but the girl was against marriage.

This is what my father also saw when he went to Delhi. The government had not built a road and the people were building it themselves. That is the spirit. To defy fate and snatch it away for yourself. We Pakistanis should look at such things as an example. In jirgas and panchayats even in our nation women are sold to the highest bidder or to a person 40 years older. We must stand against such cultural barriers like the people in Indian occupied parts are.
