If taken in the metaphoric sense, it could be something a person reveres as a God whether that something has a physical form or not.


It is anything that is worshipped as a God of some kind.
If it's not worshipped, it's not an idol even if it's a statue.
If it is worshipped, then it is an idol even if it isn't a statue.
