Germany summons US ambassador over 'Cold War' spying leaks

Germany has summoned the US ambassador to the Berlin Foreign Ministry over leaked reports of massive scale US spying on the EU. Chancellor Merkel said earlier that if the reports were confirmed it would be “unacceptable Cold War-style behavior.”

The spokesperson to German Chancellor Angela Merkel said the government wants “trust restored” following the reports.

"If it is confirmed that diplomatic representations of the European Union and individual European countries have been spied upon, we will clearly say that bugging friends is unacceptable," said spokesman Steffen Seibert.


"We are no longer in the Cold War," Seibert added.

Action is needed,words are useless.If we had guts we would shut american bases in Europe down.I know for sure that my country's politicians don't have the balls for that and I think many in Europe are equally spineless.Suspension of trade negociations will be a good moderate response for now,and higher security for our officials,IT and technological sectors .

Europe can and should take care of it`s security with minimum US involvement , Germany is in fact most spied on by US besides China.

With no US involement i would say,the americans have lumped in Germany in the same category with China and Iran

I won't why US continues to crap its pants over the ex-Nazis.

Its been decades since Germany has reformed and has given way to a peaceful, commercial, scientific and prosperous society.
Germans have not invaded anyone, have infact welcomed many refugees from unstable countries, have encouraged positive growth and education and have been, as always, at the pinnacle of innovation in engineering.

I think Germans rely on US too much despite the fact that they can easily hold on without any US support.

Like Japan, they should also consider re-militarizing; but this time under a more rational form of politics--- taking UK and France in the stride rather than bombing them to stone age like WW2.

If anyone can challenge USA in healthy competition, it is Germans.

I'm with you there, but many of the older generation in Germany still linger on the "thank you USA for getting us rid of the Nazi" and Cold War propaganda. But even Fance since Sarko the traitor has become a buttlicker of the US. We'll see wether Hollande will be able to turn the steering wheels or he hilmself is also a buttlicker of the US.

As for Germany with Merkel, it's hopeless. She grew up in the former GDR and thinks that she has to prove that she indeed has arrived in the "west" but virtually crawling into the backside of the US.

One thing is for sure, nothing is going to change the US’s policy and nobody is going to make the US apologise for its deed. They will continue to do what they feel is best in their national interest..they dont care how Germany or France wish them to be treated by the US.
