As the world's consumption of natural gas is expected to skyrocket in the next decade and already holder of world's 2nd biggest gas deposits in the world after Russia:
  • Iran last week revealed a huge new gas deposit located in the Iranian sector of the Caspian Sea named "Chalous".
  • This field will be able to supply at least 20 percent of Europe’s gas needs.
  • According to KEPCO’s chief executive officer, Ali Osouli, the Chalous structure is estimated to hold gas reserves equivalent to a quarter of the supergiant South Pars gas field, or around 11 of its phases.
  • South Pars has an estimated 14.2 trillion cubic metres (Tcm) of gas reserves in place plus 18 billion barrels of gas condensate and already accounts for around 40 percent of Iran’s total estimated 33.8 tcm of gas reserves and about 80 percent of its gas production.
  • The ‘Chalous’ structure is to be developed with the intention of forming a new gas hub in northern Iran to complement the southern gas hub centred on the massive South Pars field.
  • The principal named developer of the Chalous site is Iran’s Khazar Exploration and Production Company (KEPCO)

Aliyev will go Erdogan-style and say "You must share it with us or not drill at all!" 😂

But seriously now,if that's true,it could lift Iran's position in the geopolitical arena even more. And also make Western countries plot more against stability in Iran right now, probably.

the field discovered is in the iranian sector but Caspian holds more gas and most likely there will be discoveries in other sectors as well.

I do not know the Internal politics of Pakistan but it is surprising to see that Pakistan sits next door to world's second biggest gas reserves and there is no pipeline from Iran to Pakistan...not oil and not Gas..but I know Pakistan buys LNG from Qatar!!!!...Iran will go out of her way to give Pakistan good price on Gas or OIl..so what stops this...May be Pakistan has to buy her energy needs from the Arabs due to some arrangements I do not know... but no pipeline from Iran to Pakistan just seems strange to me.

I think the biggest problem are the sanctions on Iran because of which we couldn't even build the IPI Pipeline; next is quite possibly the political and financial factor from Saudi Arabia and UAE. I guess even if there are no sanctions on Iran, Pakistan would still struggle to import anything of significance from Iran simply because of the influence of Saudi Arabia and UAE who each host millions of Pakistani expats......something which they hold over our heads regularly.
