The United States sees outgoing Pakistan Army Chief Gen Raheel Sharif as a valued and respected partner in the war against terrorism, a US official said on Tuesday.

Asked to comment on media reports that the general was stepping down as the army chief, a US State Department spokesperson said that any transition in the Pakistan Army was an internal matter of the country and it was only appropriate that any statement regarding this change should come from its government.

"We have seen the reports about the chief of army staff transition. This is an internal Pakistani matter, and I would direct you to the government of Pakistan for any further information," Dawn quoted the spokesperson as saying.

The department also shared a statement issued by the US embassy in Islamabad, saying: "We have seen the statements from ISPR announcing that Gen Raheel Sharif is stepping down as Chief of Army Staff at the end of his three-year term."

The statement noted that Gen Sharif was "a valued and respected partner in the regional fight against terrorism throughout his years as army chief". "We congratulate him and his family and wish them well," it added.

Gen Sharif held two meetings with US Secretary of State John Kerry during his visits to Washington in 2014 and 2015.

He tried to make Pakistan a banana republic for the fourth time but unfortunately for the military, he failed.

Pakistan is as much of a banana republic as its political leaders want it to be. The bastards are so ethically bankrupt and corrupt that they do not have the moral courage to stand up for their mandate and by standing down actually allow the national security elements to dominate by letting them chart their own policies and strategy.

From the PM down to a peon, in the PM secretariat and all the way to the NA, all they are worried about is lining their pockets. When financial interest is the end all, be all then why would they worry about the country being a banana republic?

No doubt Raheel Shareef made life easier for USA in Afghanistan.
I am not sure what you are trying to convey here. They funded our operations and assassinated a large number of terrorists inside Pakistan, making the job of our soldiers easier on the ground and increasing the likelihood of success of operations like Zarb-e-Azab. They also tutored our military in COIN during the era of Pervez Musharraf. Do not delude yourself into thinking that we are superhuman beings and others depend upon us for gains.

Cooperation between the US and Pakistan, is necessary to stabilize the entire region (Pakistan included).
