LAHORE - The ‘gang of four’ has not been invited to the 88th birthday celebrations of PPP founder Z.A Bhutto to be held at Bilawal House Lahore tomorrow. The development holds significance as the event is being organised under directions from PPP Chairman Bilawal Bhutto Zardari.
His senior Adviser Bashir Riaz has sent invitations to senior party leaders excluding ,otherwise, four important party leaders who are being dubbed as ‘gang of four’ by circles close to Asif Zardari for what they call conspiring against the party Co-Chairman.
Secretary General PPP, Sardar Latif Khosa, senior party leader Jahangir Badr, central Punjab President Mian Manzoor Ahmad Wattoo, South Punjab President Makhdum Ahmed Mehmud, President Punjab Women Wing, Beelam Hasnain and party’s Lahore President Samina Khalid Ghurki have been invited to be part of the ceremony. Bashir Riaz told The Nation that he was organising the function on behalf of Chairman Bilawal. He said he had invited all workers and leaders to attend the birthday party. Riaz said he had invited them through a tweet.
But sources, on the other hand, said that Ch Aitzaz Ahsan, Qamar Zaman Kaira and Nadeem Afzal Chan, the three among the four suspected party leaders from Punjab have not been invited to send a message to them and other party men that top party leadership was not happy with them. The other suspected name is that of Syed Khurshid Shah but there is justification for not inviting him since the event has been organised at Punjab level. Close aides of Asif Ali Zardari and Bilawal Bhutto suspect that the four senior party leaders were opposed to Asif Ali Zardari playing an active role in party affairs. They think that party Co-Chairman should act as patron and leave the party matters to young Bilawal.
These leaders also voiced concern when a resolution was moved in the recent CEC meeting asking the party Co-Chairman to act as President of PPP-P. An article by Bashir Riaz published in an Urdu daily last week also hints at the existence of such a group within the PPP. He has stated that Asif Ali Zardari was facing opposition from some party men whom he called ‘Porus elephants’. Party men close to Zardari believe that these party men were playing in the hands of establishment which had the agenda to keep him away from country’s politics.
