Former Libyan strongman Gaddafi was irrational in his anti-China position. He paid for it with his life. If Gaddafi had not been anti-Chinese, he would still be ruling the country today. Gaddafi was about two days away from having his troops reach Benghazi along the Tripoli-Benghazi highway. Just a few more days and Gaddafi would have crushed the rebels.
However, the United States hurriedly tabled a UNSC (ie. United Nations Security Council) resolution to authorize Western bombing of Gaddafi's forces. In Gaddafi's most important hour, China reminded him there was a price to pay for being anti-Chinese.
It is astonishing to me that some Asian countries today carelessly voice their anti-China rhetoric. Using history as a guide, China will make them pay eventually. The most obnoxious countries on the list are Japan (Shinzo Abe) and the Philippines (Aquino).
----------
Gaddafi sealed his own fate. Chinese permanent veto at UNSC was never a possibility.
In the end, China had the last laugh.
When China abstained on a crucial United Nations Security Council vote, Gaddafi was finished (see citation below).
The moral of the story: you never know when you need the big guy. Gaddafi's past criticisms of China were just plain dumb.
