Future of the automotive industry

I'm opening this thread mainly to discuss future of auto industry, which is changing very rapidly, driven by technological advancements and regulations of various local and international authorities and businesses.

It all occurred to me while browsing for my next ride. I was struck with reality that auto industry is passing through a revolutionary reorganization and reconstruction and many new parameters are required to consider while buying a vehicle, which were non existent in past.

Let's discuss, where we'll stand in terms of technology and regulations in next 10 years and what will be the cost of ownership in those 10 years, followed by total life cycle cost.

We see following big changes happening in the auto industry:
  1. The spread of advanced driver assistance systems (ADAS) potentially paving the way for the proliferation of self-driving vehicles.
  2. The rise of electric vehicles (EVs).
  3. Changing environmental and energy regulations.
  4. China auto industry.

This is the new EV launched by MB. I think it will be available for sale next year, because they have discontinued their lone EV B class electric drive.

What's the mileage?

I think we need to start asap given our cities have zero concept of green zones and how a city needs gardens. Some pedestrian zones only.

It would be a damn to see these beauties driven on such shoddy roads.

This is still not in market, but as I stated its design is complete and this will be up for commercial sale, because this is first MB vehicle built from scratch with EV concept.
They even patented brand EQ.
However last experiment of MB with EV was B class electric drive. Which had TESLA motor. Now its discontinued.
As per company claim it could give you 100 kM/charge and battery capacity was 28kwh.

No... but you can preorder. These things you can find over the internet with basic search.

For an average Pakistani. We have either traffic problems or can't afford problems.

@BATMAN I am not sure about the scope of thread. Is about global trends or you want it to be Pakistan specific?

It has to do with every individual, because cars are part of our life and we take the decision to buy them in few times in our lives.
I have bought 4 cars in my life and driven most popular brands...used to believe, I know it all but its not same any more.
Example, if you are going to buy a car today or tomorrow, what you will come across and what you should consider before buying a car!
In Pakistan.... I can bet you will have Chinese coming in couple of years and also other manufacturers, who cannot sell conventional cars in competitive and highly tech. oriented markets... so it will benefit Pakistanis as well. Pakistan cannot isolate itself from the close by future.

The question is when are the Chinese diving in to this market.

With traffic.. you mean unorganized driving habits!
To fix it with tech. we are far far away, but EV can fix the issues of environmental pollution.
I see Pakistanis are already buying hybrids, may be not out of the regulatory reasons but more of economic reasons!
Now this exactly, I want to discuss... if you in Pakistan have taken a decision to buy hybrid.. what was your calculations? How's the driving experience?

Whereas, Chinese would be coming sooner than later. I believe they will knockout all in Pakistan and this will give very good exposure to Chinese of foreign market sales and opportunity to refine. So based on that I want to guess, until which time frame Chinese would start challenging advanced Japanese and European counterparts.

The problem is the huge cost Pakistanis have to pay and they still don't get cars that justify the cost. If we compare ourselves with international market then we are still kept backward so I don't think so if international change apply to us at same scale at least not in near future. If you want to discuss the Pakistan market then discuss one million mark and if things are going to change in future.

Our local market is controlled by monopoly and from it seems every new player also wants to exploit poor Pakistanis since GOVT is not interested in protecting our interests. First our market need to adopt to the standards other developed countries are using and then we may think about future and electric cars. Most of our nation is running against 80s or 90s era NON EFI junk.

As of this point the only option under one million mark is Suzki Mehran for our middle class and by this standard we are no where near modern auto mobile industry.

They are moving from plug in hybrids to pure electric...however their 2 best selling ones are still very very small.

Even GM is selling one



You'll have to go for a Geely Emgrand EV if you want a standard sized car.

Active parking assist, now this is really some thing kind be avoided, but in other vehicles its offered as option, so prices are really tricky these days.

I travel by bus lol

But anything below 25mpg is a crime to the climate in Lahore and Karachi.

So educated people like you should think and calculate, if its worth it.
Would you like to have distronic, do you like to have EBS, do you like to have airbags, do you like automatic, do you need power steering, you like /require acceleration of corvette .........
Do you like to energy class A or having E has no consequences.
As I know, in Pakistan hybrid cars are very popular. I know initial investment in Pakistan is quite high but again... does it pay off to invest in hybrid?

Now these are proper cars for city dwellers. Highly practical.

If these costs cheap we can replace the motorbike and make a huge improvement
